If you want humor, humility, knowledge, intelligence, common sense and a great big smile....Kathy Martin, you've got it all, and you're very unassuming about the whole thing! Wow! You knocked out of the sewing room on this one! Thank You! I’m not big on fussy cutting so if a print happens to be upside down it really doesn’t bother me. I didn’t used to be that way because, historically, I am a perfectionist. I’m learning that there is always going to be an aspect of quilting that is not perfect. Finished is perfect! Love Friday Morning with The Catbird! Sew on Sis! 💖

I love today’s video, as usual, but also loved the scrappy, vintage look of the mismatched stripes on the melody quilt block. If quilters are going for uniformity the solid or very small prints work perfectly. But some of us like that “make it do” type of vintage scrap quilt look more. Just a thought. And I really do love that melody block and want to make that quilt now! So many quilts-so little time! ❤️

Thanks, Shannon! And yes, there are as many quilters who love the scrappiness of the mismatched stripe as there are those of us who would avoid them like the plague! 😂 And both make beautiful quilts which is why quilting is just such a wonderful artform! ❤️ I've been wanting to make that Melody quilt for so long---just haven't found the right fabric, or right recipient yet!

I teach knitting, and my favorite designation for skill level is, "Adventurous Beginner". 😂
@Denise11Schultz
@Denise11Schultz Ай бұрын
@sarahburke8955 I like your category. I teach knitting too, and I wonder if anyone else teaches with these two tricks I use. #1 First I cast on for each student, in their choice of yarn and needles. Then I teach them the knit stitch. I believe it’s much easier for people to learn the knit stitch (garter) first, and only tackle purl stitch, cast on, and cast off (in that order) after they are comfortable with how their hands, the needles, and the yarn feel, and work together. #2 If someone makes a mistake, gets stuck, or needs help with something that is rows back, I personally do the ripping, and reknit it back to where there is fresh yarn. That gives them the feeling that it can be fixed, without a lot of struggle. I don’t find it necessary to make them do it. I want them always to be comfortable and feel safe. In time they learn to fix their own mistakes. I help them build confidence first, then tackle challenges. That happens with young students and old, from an 8 year old boy, to a 90+ great-grandmother. I love that so many people love learning to knit. It’s a skill and a joy worth preserving.

Great video, Cathy. Whilst I love checks, gingham, stripes and large print fabrics, I use them with caution and a directional print can be a nightmare. Have had upside down trees and clouds to unpick many times and of course it takes more fabric. But like you, I'm delighted when I find a shirt with contrasting collar cuffs and sometimes button plaques. These are ideal for that final blue star block, as they can be very small and limited in number yet mix and match perfectly. As to sizing up or sizing down, the maths really gives us a brain workout. No wonder we enjoy quilting so much.

Patterns for shirts (limited yardage)..you’all.. “ANY” scrappy quilt!! No brainer. No worries. No math. No need to spend all that time evaluating color schemes. Also, I wish I could show all of you my collection of photos for scrappy quilts made with shirts/thrifted fabrics using triangles and so many other traditional patterns❤ I know this next comment might be controversial, why buy patterns? After all, most of us are trying to quilt..cheaply..because of the price of fabric. KZfaq has thousands of free instructions for almost any quilt that you have your heart set on making. I can buy lots of fabric for the cost of that pattern! Also, remember, just watching a quilt video and giving a thumbs up, is a way of “paying” for those instructions used to make a quilt..right? Happy quilting everyone..(KH)

I have two ideas. Although it is an extra expense, triangle paper and flying geese paper would eliminate most of the problems that arise from sewing on the bias. Also, I think that men’s dress shirts would make a stunning quilted jacket, like the pattern from grainline studios. Just look up the Ralph Lauren quilted jacket to see how gorgeous a quilted jacket can be. And so well suited to the colors and stripes of mens’ shirts.

I made my son a quilt out of old jeans and plaid flannel shirts. I also added in some of my old plaid flannel pajamas. Big mistake!!! He loved the quilt & used it everyday. After a few years it was in shreds. The pajamas was the fabric that was torn. I guess it was to thin to stand up to the denim in the wash. 😢

I think of flannel as rugged and tough (insert image of lumberjack here) but they can actually be very stretchy and flimsy! Soft, yes. Rugged? Not so much, at least in my experience. Thank you, Terry! ❤️ The pink quilt is a Disappearing 4 Patch; it has a fair amount of shirts but really is just a celebration of pinks from my whole fabric stash. I followed the pattern and measurements from a video over on Material Girl KZfaq channel. You can watch it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7VlisZjvdXKk5s.htmlsi=CNtl3KUFSdVWSR58

When buying yardage, which brand/company’s fabric feels most similar to shirt fabric? Going shopping today for some yardage to use with some of my shirts

I have found that the base fabric that Art Gallery fabrics uses is very crisp and similar to a dress shirt

Ok, I'm late to the party, but it so happens that I agree with Jennifer 100%. AGF fabrics have a very similar feel to shirt fabrics!

Do you find a lot of white shirts in cotton? It seems like all of the white shirts I find are poly blends.

I do find a fair amount of 100% cotton white shirts---but then again I'm shopping at many different stores, so that puts it in my favor. 😘

Is the quilt behind you made from shirts? Do you have a video on how to make it?

Speaking of “drawing the eye…” That quilt is so beautiful, it’s all I could do to look at the demo blocks.😍😵‍💫🫠

The pattern is “Disappearing four patch” which I’ve come to know is quite an old and well loved pattern. I’m in the process of cutting out squares for this quilt myself. You can find many tutorials online for it😊.

It is not made from shirts (well, some but not all) and no, I don't have a video on how to make it. I used the tutorial by Material Girl on YT for sizes and how-to!

I picked up a few shirts, took them all apart and they are still sitting there. I made a mistake of picking up 2 that aren’t plain cotton…darn polyester….

You can still use them! Just use a starch and lots of pins when you sew your pieces! 🤓👍🏻

Although you listed all the quilt patterns you talked about I'm missing your list of top 5. Could you just star them in the list and add a footnote? Otherwise I have to watch the entire vid again next time I want to use your generous knowledge as a resource. Thanks again Kathy!

Robyn, I’m not sure what you mean by “your list of top 5”-I don’t actually have a ranking of the patterns in this video. But let me know and I’ll try and respond accordingly. 😊🤓👍🏻

@@TheCatBirdQuilts I think there were 2 or 3 quilt patterns that you recommended as being great for shirt fabric over all the patterns that you listed. I wanted to purchase just those but didn't want to have to watch the entire vid again to see which ones they were. I was just hoping you would star them in your list. Thanks for the quick response. I've learned so much from your vids. Thank you.

The pinwheel type pink stripe for me doesn’t sent me into a spin what really gets me is when the stripe or check is wonky. The irritation is also some material comes wonky. UGH. There fore I have a lot of squares I will probably cut down so you don’t see (I).

I agree--and when fabric is printed wonky it is just irritating!

I don't actually know, Lynda! It was a random fat quarter that I got at the impulse-buy counter at my local quilt store about 2 years ago!
