Opuntia / Prickly pear cacti is a new world species thus it only made its way to Europe after 1492 (when Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas). While cacti have become an invasive species in Australia & South Africa, its good to see that some countries have embraced it. Also, I live in Colorado and prickly pear cacti can grow at over 2000 m elevation in the rocky mountains!

I really want to grow a prickly pear cactus, I live in the UK and eventually will be moving to the country side. The only way I can think of being able to do it is to have a greenhouse of sorts. Our winters can get too cold, I just love prickly pears!

Grazie from California where we have purple prickly pear fruits in our yard. We also have a fig tree, but never knew to use the leaves to remove the thorns. We either peel them, or use a flame to burn them off. I’m going to try your fig leaf method next summer. We like to eat them like you do, and sometimes we remove the seeds and put them in a blender for a fruit smoothie in the summer. Delicious! Again, mille grazi, amico.

You removed the entire peel of the prickly pair not just zest. You can save the peel and sun dry it. Eat it for later. Your method of thorn removal is water wasteful. Yet Scilily cries for lack of water. A dampened, soft-bristled brush would served the purpose. It is obvious by the improper pruning, that you fear your plants, and treat them like step-children. Also, you should keep bees.

Same as Peruvian Apple Cactus! I got them but I didn't know that they are edible. You are giving me such a useful suggestion! I will try and show you the result. Regarding the Opuntia Ficus Indica (traditional prickly pears in Sicily) we use to eat the fruits fresh. Nobody cooks the fruits. But someone use to cook the leaves... In my life I have seen only 2 cases: in Mexico and in San Mauro Castelverde, a small village in the Madonie area (province of Palermo near Cefalù) where people use to cook the leaves like cutlets. They make a sort of bitter and sour sauce. It's so funny!

No fertilizer. No water. This is the only plant of my garden that I don't water. It is a very "independent plant"... Rainwater is enough.

How old are they? The Yellow ones taste like a ripe Papaya The Red ones taste like a little bit of Watermelon What I never tasted are the Green ones with white flesh The downside of them are that they are seedy 💁

Hi Red! These plants are about 35/38 years old. Actually the red/purple/violet prickly pears in Sicily are the sweetest ones. The Green ones have a middle taste, something like between the two latter. They are sweeter than the yellow/orange ones but not as sweet as the red/purple/violet ones. We had a very dry summertime and so the most of them are actually seedy.

Its pretty wild how a plant that isnt even native can get naturalized and integrated so much into the local culture. I live where a lot of opuntia species grow naturally and hardly anyone that isnt hispanic will eat them. Im growing a whole field of them to try and test out how they taste. If i dont like them im just gonna make them into prickly pear cannabis candies, all weed candy tastes good.

you're absolutely right. It is not native but it belongs to our culture. Perhaps because we had several centuries of Spanish domination and they transfered to us their experience during the time of South-American colonies. However we are pretty sure your candies are amazing! Thanks for your nice comment!

@@3dviz332 Hi, actually also in Sicily some people use to cook the leaves... Ironically I discovered it after visiting Mexico. It is San Mauro Castelverde, a small Sicilian village in the Madonie area (province of Palermo near Cefalù) where people use to cook the leaves like cutlets. They make a sort of bitter and sour sauce. Delicious!

it is also native to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, California, and Utah but then again those states were part of Mexico, so you are not wrong. it's an indigenous food. Darn it now I want agua fresca.
