Picking up stitches for a neckline is demonstrated using my Silver Birch sweater. This sweater has a fold-over neckline that is picked up from the bound off neckline. The pattern for this sweater will come out sometime in 2022. Sign up for my newsletter at the link below to make sure you don’t miss the release!

What a great video! I hate to tell you how many decades I've been knitting, and how many garments and items I've made, and still I find occasionally I have to go back and look something up to see if I've been doing it correctly, or the simplest way possible. This is one of those times, and your instructions are the best I've run across. Thanks SO much! Norma B.

Thank you for your video on picking up stitches at a neckline. It’s the most clear video I have watched. I am a beginner and have subscribed to your videos. I think you will be my best teacher.

I hate picking up stitches, and have done mostly raglan sweaters because of it. But this year I’m trying to stitch my repertoire, so I’m grateful that you have such easy to understand instructions! Thank you!

I've rarely seen instructions on the rate of how many stitches to pick up around the neck. It's usually "pick up and knit __ right front sts, then __ right shoulder sts...etc for a total of __sts". No wonder some of my necks are a bit wonky. I have seen the rate for a buttonband. Thank you! I'm swatching away trying to match gauge so I can make your Blizzard or Ruska from my stash....

Thank you for showing us this! I’m definitely saving it in my to watch later videos. We also listen to super simple songs 😆 I immediately picked the song up because we play it at least once every day it seems.

Firstly thank you soo much gif this video. I’ve found it soo helpful as I’m such a newbie!! One question …. I’m knitting a jumper for my grandson aged 6 years old and the pattern says to make thx neck rib long enough to fold in half. I don’t fancy this idea. The hip rib is 5 cm … would you suggest I do the crew neck say 3 cm deep and not double it over ? Second question is what’s the norm? Knit one pearl one to match the front/back/ sleeve rib or plain knit each row? Once again thank you for the video …. Lynn

I’ve never had advice about frequency of loops - just “pick Up and knit 9 stitches down side, then across the front” etc

Great video. I do have a question about your starting point on the back, though. It looks as though you worked with the wrong side facing, and I think this puts a row of stitches on the outside of the neckband. I've always worked with the right side facing, so that the resulting line of picked-up stitches ends up on the inside of the neckband. It may not matter, and I may be incorrect about this -- I just wanted to mention it.

How did you decide on 2:3 rather than 3:4 or a rate based on your actual gauge?

My pattern only gives the total number of stitches to pick up and doesn’t say how many to skip in between. Do you have any advice on how to figure that out? Or is it just an eyeballing it situation? Thank you!

Thanks for a very informative video. Would this work on a pram blanket edge? I don’t want to end up with a ridge at one end.

You will have a tiny ridge on the inside of the picked up edge. It won’t be huge or uncomfortable for the baby, but there will be a tiny bit of the fabric that rolls over to the underside. It’s about 1 stitch worth.

Great video! I've never seen a rate of how many stitches to pick up in the various places around the neck. My pattern just says to pick up x number along the neck and x number along the two sides of the front for a v-neck edge for a total of x stitches. It’s very frustrating to achieve the correct number! Is there a general rule to follow? Or a way to figure out the rate from the pattern?

Some say 2:3, some 3:4, others do a ratio that depends on your gauge. Most say to pick up every stitch on straight edges like back neck, centre neck cast-on, or armhole base, rather than 2:3.

Hello.... thank you for your video it was very helpful, clear and informative. I am very new to knitting. Just one question please....... my pattern, which has an inset not raglan sleeve, says to join my back and front on one side (right side) then begin to pick up my stitches down the front, pick up /knit across the front (my stitches on the holder), then join the other shoulder seam before picking up my ascending stitches towards that seam and on along the back. Would it not be easier to join both shoulder seams at the beginning before attempting to pick up my stitches? I'm I missing a salient point, or making the process awkward in some way by doing this? Sorry for the protracted explanation, thank you for your time.

Hi! Without seeing the pattern, I’m not sure why the designer is asking you to do that. Please reach out to them and ask for clarification.

I am so tired of trying to learn how to pick up stitches under the arm of a sweater and along the top seam of a dickie. All have been ripped out six times now. I don’t even want to finish the dang thing now! It’s a fuzzy yarn and the stitches look worn now…😢. It calls for me to pick up MORE stitches that were previously stitched and it is way too tight. HELP!
