In this video I show you how to pick up your rabbit. My rabbits will always hate being picked up but there is a safe way to do it, even when they hate it or try to struggle out of your arms. I only pick up my rabbits when necessary and I encourage you to do the same.
Sorry if the demonstration isn't clear, it does take a lot of practise and confidence to do it, but I didn't want to pick them up too much even just for this video lmao. I truly am just a simp for my rabbits ._.
Hope this helps if anyone has bunnies like mine who hate being picked up!
If you want a clearer demonstration of how to pick up and hold your rabbit, check out Lennon the bunny's video (be mindful that she has a strong bond with her rabbit and it doesn't mind being picked up and that's not the case for every rabbit.)

my rabbits absolutely hate being picked up too! I srsly marvel at ppl who's rabbit seemed to jump onto them, demanding cuddles. anyway, what helps me with picking my rabbits up is a) only doing it when i have to, eg for going to the vet and b) enclosing them in a smaller space (like your x-pen or a room) so they have less chances to hide and escape, which makes picking them up a lot faster and less stressful. i enjoyed your video !!!

When you said people roast you for not picking up your rabbit, as a rabbit owner I was very pleased that you respected your rabbits not wanting to be picked up. My bunnies aren’t really into us picking them up, but they were semi chill when we first got them. We saw advice not to pick them up unless necessary, but it’s because of this that one of them just kicks and squirms away from getting her nails cut. It’s so difficult, and of course all the tutorials have comparatively chill bunnies!

We have a routine with our bunnies where we pick them up once a week, check the nails, eyes, ears and have a quick brush. They get carrots only when picked up because we noticed it was like crack for them 😅 They are lil drama queens at first but they quickly realise that it's just the routine and they focus only on the carrot pieces. It has made a huge difference

I work at a vet clinic, picking up a bunny the wrong way won't only make them hate you, it can kill them. We have to be really careful with bunnies, and see too many who end up dead because a child or someone who didn't do any research tried picking them up. Very important video!

@@nat1baby Of course this video wasn't the first one in the searching result. And of course I didn't only watch this video. While reading word and picture materials and 'professional advise videos' from rabbit experts and breeders, I did need show cases from regular bunny owners. That's why this video's so great because she did everything right basing on experts and gave me more confidence that I also could do it even I wasn't an expert.
@nat1baby
@nat1baby 3 жыл бұрын
@@jintianyihou that cant be correct as no expert would ever agree with a video that advertises anything other than seeking professionally trained people for advice. The basic principle of this video being here is the main problem. The other is that she does not make it clear that she is NOT AN EXPERT. Which means through implication of advertising advice on a public platform she is undermining the need for professionals and experts. And no professional animal expert would advise picking up a rabbit without explaining the physical ramifications to it clearly.

@jintianyihou 3 жыл бұрын
@@nat1baby I got your point. I respect anyone with higher standards for information resource reliability. However, I took this video as regular bunny owner's show case cause I knew she's not an expert of bunny (I didn't see any certification) and I already did my own study from professional experts (even they didn't pull out any certification neither). I liked this video because it showed me a normal bunny owner could pick up her bunny. It's like an experienced mom telling a rookie mom how to take care of baby. Yes, pediatric doctors should always be checked with. Expert advises don't conflict with positive support from non-experts. And please, bring out your concerns directly if you do concern, and if there's a next time.

Here's my method for teaching a very nervous and scared Bunny to be be picked up: Sit with your bun for at least 30 minutes a day, until your bun will jump into your lap as soon as you sit down - Now you've established you're not a threat Next, when your bunny is in your lap, lean back and hold a treat around your neck area. - Now you're established you're not going to do something if your bun is vulnerable Next, lie all the way down and do the same thing - keep at it until your bun will lie down on top of you. This will take a long time, 2 months for me. While you're doing this, keep an eye out for when your bun is thumping. If (s)he *ever* thumps for seemingly no reason, look at her/him and thump as a response about a second later. If your bun thumps again after a few seconds - you are now considered a fellow bunny. This is the ultimate sign of approval - and only then should you start trying to pick your bunny up, without going to the vet etc. I'd like to reiterate: *Don't pick up your bunny before then* - this is *extremely* important. If you do pick your bunny up as anyway, you will destroy all the trust you're trying to build: And a bunny remembers, there's a good chance you will have to start over if you break your bun' trust. Here's how I taught Bento how to be picked up: - While lying down and your bun is on laying on top of you, offer cuddles, if your bun accepts, start cuddling your bun. Do full body strokes - when your bun accepts you doing it with both hands simultaneously, you can now start trying to pick your bun up: As you're cuddling, stop one hand around their backside and the other around their neck/head. The one in the back is for support, the other is to hold, and show you're in charge at the same time. Put pressure down, and when you feel you got a good grip of the bun - sit upright. Then stand. This is *key*: When you're lifting your bunny, you're breaking your bunny' trust; what's important is 2 things: 1) *You* are in charge in this instance, no exceptions. If your bun is trying to fight it, ignore it. If (s)he starts biting, hold them away from your body and then back in - you must *under absolutely no circumstances* let him/her go. You will need to communicate that when you're lifting him/her - that you are in charge. 2) *Being lifted should be a good thing* - give treats, talk very softly. If they fight, don't raise your voice loudly. You will need to hold your bunny until they are *not* fighting it. This is the *only time* where you should hold your bun despite their teeth clattering; the two of you are *not* going to be friends after you set him/her down - but you will need to communicate that you're friendly and still in charge. If your bun' teeth are clattering *as you are stroking him/her* - consider your Bunny' personality and whether they will ever be more calm. Do keep in mind, that you might risk teeth-clattering becoming a sign of wanting to get down; this is a horrible association to make: *Do not* make your bun associate clattering teeth (feeling trapped) with being picked up. After you have successfully held your (calmer) bun for about a full minute - very carefully sit him/her down. If (s)he is fighting it or is acting scared about being put down unto the floor - lift him/her back up immediately. Hold for about 2-3 seconds, then slowly set down again. Keep repeating until they're completely calm when their backlegs touch the ground and you can calmly sit them down. Your bun will be *pissed* - most likely sprint away as if you're a predator and thump loudly, possibly multiple times without ever losing track of you. Sit with your bunny again, if they are still looking scared after ~5-10 minutes, leave the room. There's a good chance your bun will be mad for more than the day, approach and offer cuddles and treats a few times a day until (s)he accepts. When your bun isn't furious anymore, pick him/her up again slowly. *This is the hardest part* - you are going to have to repeatedly severely offend your bun, but still show you're not a threat and that being picked up as okay. Keep at it, until your bun is only mad for about an hour or so - then you *might* be able to pick him/her up more often. Keep at it and they will eventually accept; not enjoy. If you keep lifting him/her about weekly, you will eventually get a content bunny. This entire ordeal took me 2½-3 years. But in the end he's jumping unto my lap if I sit at my desk, into my bed and is actually a functioning guard: He will thump if he hears anyone walking up the outside stairs, which I can't hear. After I made the connection, I gave him a treat and he's been doing it since. Buns are *a lot* smarter than you think - it just takes a *very* long time to get 'into their circle' so to speak. I wish you the best of luck - *be extremely patient* Techniques The way I pick up Bento today, is I signal that I want to pick him up by having my two open hands about 20-30 cm away from each side of him, then slowly move in. If he lays down as I touch his stomach area, he accepts - otherwise he will move away. The key is the rejection isn't mad; just a "no thanks". He might also just do a slight growl if he's being lazy - or telling me to leave him the frick alone, he's trying to sleep. The way I sit down Bento is by having one hand on his behind, and the other under his front-feet. I sit him down very slowly - the back feet touching ground first. It should look like he is standing, before setting down his front side.

This is some awesome information, I totally agree with you! Bunnies are incredibly intelligent, more than people give them credit for. I never knew about them thumping meant they accept you. One of my bunnies thumped this way and I never knew why and now I see why he's the one who trusts me the most. Thanks so much for sharing, especially for the very nervous bunnies xx

Thank you for the detailed info. I just got a new bunny who is 3, and the only way I can get him outside and then back inside is to pick him up. I’ve tried using a carrier etc, but he hides. Any other tips on how to help move him for some outside play without picking him up?
@nivyan
@nivyan 10 ай бұрын
@@martac7316 Train your rabbit to come to you when called. If your rabbit always comes when it hears its name, you'll be able to get them to move anywhere! First, consider how your rabbit currently acts: Does it come to you whenever you approach? Does it follow you around the house? Does it ignore you until you approach closely? If it always follows you, you need to focus on distinguishing between when you say "hey!" or something else, and your rabbits name. If your rabbit isn't that social, offer some treats - if they know a treat is in the mix, it should make the ready for action. Now that you have an attentive cute little bunny expectantly waiting, you're going to use your own experience with your rabbit to figure out what will work best for them. *Consistency is key* - and when things go awry, stop and show your bunny you're mad. For example, when I was teaching my rabbit to come to me - he'd become really defensive about the treat, because I tried enticing him by moving it closer, then back to the place where I want him to go. But he saw it as a challenge - to grab it before I could move my hand. If he succeeded, I would pick him up, put him in his cage, "kick" towards him with my back turned to show I'm *really displeased* and then put a towel over his cage. But, *this is important* , that's what *worked for us* and there's a very good chance it won't work with your rabbit, so don't you f-ing dare copying it: Your rabbit *will* hate you for it. (Sorry about language, but it's extremely important) Once you've setup effective methods of teaching your rabbit, you should be using all of your rabbit language skills to *constantly, closely observe* while you're training: If your rabbit isn't having fun and is uncomfortable, you might accidentally be forcing them to doing something they really don't enjoy - that's a horrible situation that could genuinely destroy the trust you've built up over years. And finally; picking your rabbit up should be the *final* step - even if you've somehow convinced your rabbit it's okay, it's still super uncomfortable for them. You *need overwhelming evidence* for the opposite, before you should be handling your rabbit in your hands regularly. I'm sorry if I came off as negative! ♥It's a really touchy subject, rabbits are incredibly misunderstood animals and I feel very strongly about predator owners handling their prey pet without the correct context in mind.

Or is it best to just free roam them full time (which I'm not sure my parents would be too happy about that. And when they free roam, do you keep them in just 1 room or the whole house because many youtubers do different things so I want to know what's best. Thank you 😊

A lot of bunnies don't like being held but I've seen some that actually don't mind it. Like my sisters old pet bunny back when we were younger (his name was Kilo). However, she only allowed my sister to pick her up. no one else was able to.

Thanks. I’m having a tough time with picking up my bunny. She’s very affectionate but doesn’t like it and I wonder if it will get easier. I’m old enough to be your grandma and it’s hard for me to get that close to the floor and then get back up, my knees aren’t to good. I get on the floor with her when I can but it’s easier if I can bring her up to the sofa. Sometimes she’ll jump up but sometimes not. She *loves* sitting in my lap, being petted, she will fall asleep, but getting her there is a bit of an upset. I’ll practice. Thanks for the video.

Freaky! My Eeyore looks almost exactly like Milky only his ears are white. Anyway, I pick Eeyore up to love on him. I need him as a stress sponge, it's his job. He doesn't squirm or nip; he seems to understand. So the trade-off is that he is WELL-paid! I give him treats that he adores afterwards, and only then, as rewards for his willingness to put up with me. It seems to work. He is affectionate towards me so apparently he understands that I am harmless. He solicits long head rubs. My previous mini lop would reach up with his front legs to ask to be picked up, the way a human baby does. But then, his mindset may have been different. He hadn't been neuteted. But still, each pet has its individual likes & dislikes.

You reminded me that I taught my bun to walk down off me :D So I was standing and when he was ready to go down he just turned his head down to the ground (putting his butt in my face in the process) while I gently pushed him close to me so he had some friction while going down and then hopped on the ground. When he got older I usually was catching him at the last moment to gently put him down as he most def felt pain/discomfort jumping from my knee length to the ground (he lived 12.5 years). we never had any accidents while doing this, he was just naturally so confident in me and himself. he was unique, my foster bunnies never got it :D

Mine also run around and started digging in the corner when we tried to pick him up I felt awful but it was necessary as we need to treat his paws for mild scabies putting ointment. So we prepared some treats but then I feel awful again if he associate treats with the stress of being pick up. Yes I felt like the worst bunmom ever. We saw his firsf thump yesterday and we left him alone for hours before tried again😢😢

Im so lucky with my oldest bunny because he loves being held lol. He was easy to tame to being held tho because he is blind. Basically i would pick him up to help guide him to food or other nice things so he associates being picked up with good stuff. He also loves petting and attention so that also helps lol. Lap time is a reward for him. My youngest will act as if you are trying to murder her if you even try to hold her still in any slight way, let alone start picking her up LOL and she will NOT calm down for a good while. Genuinely its like shes ready to break her own back.
