Just wanted to say THANK YOU for taking the time to do this video. I do NOT make models I am on the complete opposite spectrum I make hairbows lol BUT my newest venture requires me to use a pin vice. I felt like a complete idiot until I watched YOUR video (second one I watched) to find out the vice I received was put together WRONG so although I often do dumb stuff in THIS case I wasn't the dumb one lol Thanks for the video !!

the pin vise you are referring to as GW (the one you said was your first ever) is actually Testors, I picked one up today at hobby lobby, I used it the first time tonight and already love it. Doesn't take the skill I thought it did, though one of my two holes didn't line up perfectly so the chaplain's crozius is a little off center haha! One thing you can also use instead of paper clips is $1 from hobby lobby the smallest gauge piano wire. Great video thanks!

I had been banging my head on a wall over how to center up the other end of the pin. The trick with the pointy end was pretty darn neat and I'm definitely going to give it a try. Thanks!

Thanks for a great video. It gave me the confidence to have a go at pinning a model for the first time. I thought it would be really tricky but with your guidance I managed to complete the project, it wasn't perfect but I completed it at a good enough level and with as little difficulty for me to be willing to go through the entire process again for another large model. Once again, thanks for your help and a great video!

I watched this video yesterday and tried it last night. Great results! Thank you! Very clear video for beginners. I'll look for others that you've done...

Cool vid bud, good to see a new one. You can also, use blue tac. Put blue tac on the piece that doesn't have the hole. Next, take the piece that has the hole and push it into the the piece with the blue tack. The pin should not be in the hole when doing this. Pull the pieces back apart. The blue tac will now show a nib where it was forced into the hole of the other piece. Drill the nib at the same angle and you have a perfect match for the pin!

Great video Devstro! Very clearly said and well shot. Man, I was really surprised when you said that not many people know about pinning. I knew about it before I even started to buy models. I guess I was lucky or something.

Best way i found to line up holes is to put some blue tack on the side without hole, put it in place and when u take them appart youll have a perfect mark for drilling. Eliminates the room for error when trying to line up at a distance.

Loctite also makes a gel version of their Superglue, doesn't go any where you don't want it to go.

Just was watching another video and was wondering what a pin vice was - thanks for the video! The guy in the other video was using it to hold his miniature steady while painting/airbrushing by drilling into the bottom of the foot of the Ork or any other area that would serve well as an anchor, and just leaving the drill bit in there while painting.

@KamenRiderNecro You twirl the drill itself. Since the back part can spin independently, you can apply constant pressure.

@CommanderZx2 I've got the GW one. I believe that Gale Force 9 also makes one, but I'm not sure if the back part spins on their model.

Ive had that old GW pin vice for 5 years and NEVER found that back compartment with 2nd bit before..

Really good vid, quite a novel method you have with scoring the other surface. My one question: would you ever recommend using pinning in lieu of magnets? I have a Techmarine Servo Harness that I want to be able to disassemble for transportation but I don't want to magnetise it all (magnets ain't cheap).. Would drilling holes for rods to stick out the back hold the arms on okay? Perhaps if I painted the holes and rods to make it a real tight squeeze?
@MaskedRiderChris14 жыл бұрын
So, you just stick the drill bit against the surface and start twirling it? Do you twirl the back part or the drill itself? You were a little vague there. Otherwise, thanks for this wonderful video!

I hear a lot of people refer to this device when it comes to repairing the joints in larger articulated figures, as they tend to break due to cheap plastic. Apparently they drill directly into joint where the peg snapped off and place the pin in there to reconnect the appendage. I have a figure where an arm peg has snapped off, do you recommend any specifc pin vice that is available for purchase online? I find most on amazon are lacking in the swivel on the back to press against your hand.

The all metal pin vice is the Testor's version...its a good buy IMO.

also question, did your clippers get slightly dinged up from clipping the paper clips or do you more heavy duty clippers from a home improvement store and not the GW or gale force 9 clippers?

Have you pinned Reaper miniatures? I have been having some problems with the stronger metal being used.

Beastmen, does that mean your doing a Beastman army? Great tips thank you

Can you use an electric drill instead of a hand drill?

I tried magnetising a Cygnar Ironclad and the magnet recently came away while painting. Would you recommend pinning the magnet in place to keep it secure?
@kevindomara8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Shrimpton Drilling into the magnet would most likely cause it to break in half. Magnets can be quite fragile.
@jcline654214 жыл бұрын
@magickarl The only reason I know about it is because mine likes to unscrew while I am using it.

Why won't you do a video about how to do a working area? and you could also show your area ... please respond if you are going to do a video like that or not, thanks...
@rigolgm12 жыл бұрын
Surprised it drills in so easily - I use a power drill and sometimes even that is hard work. I push the two parts of the model together with a small blob of paint inbetween. This shows where the holes should be drilled to line up. I'm a sucker for punishment so I use Araldite (which is very strong but takes hours to dry) and just add a blob of superglue to keep it in place while the araldite dries. But you have to be careful as the two glues react to each other and go instantly hot/streaky.

Power drills really aren't intended to drill metal. Not even soft metal like pewter
