When I heard Jeff running a *comparison between hiring contractors and doing DIY* I Joined the community right away. The wisdom he is sharing is worth 10 times more than a subscription. *Thanks a lot for sharing this, Jeff!* And for all recent *homeowners* who are soaking up Jeff's wisdom, show your appreciation 🤑. Ultimately, the most important tool you have on a job site is not a hand saw or electric drill, but your expertise and knowledge. So join Jeff's community before you buy any materials or power tools. He'll help you save on all of those things. Once again thanks, Jeff. You are a celebrity among first-time homeowners. We always talk about *DIY from Canadian Guy!*

I just finished my bathroom reno. Well, gut and rebuild based on this video, all by myself, including tearing up concrete for additional plumbing. It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed it. For me, the biggest challenge was to figure out the layout, as space was really limited, and I needed to fit a shower. That decision drove the amount of work and costs. This was not the only channel I was watching, but definitely the #1. It turned out to be great, the project was successful.

What dimension shower did you go with?
@juzoli
@juzoli 6 ай бұрын
@@TheMattLeighton Well, it was not my choice, I extended a tiny half bath as much as possible, to fit a corner shower for a guest room. It is an L shaped 8'x5' on the longer side, with 3'x2.5' missing for a washing machine on the other side. So this is a 34" rounded corner shower. Maybe a 36" would've fit, but it would've made access to the toilet awkward. I was considering a custom shower, but it would've ended up the same size, and an acrylic base with custom tiling looks high quality already. It barely fits the shower/vanity/toilet, but considering the limitations, it turned out great.

@@juzoli thanks for letting me know and sounds good! I have a room that’s 70.5” W x 56.5” D and I’m converting into a full bathroom and I am trying to figure out how to configure a tiny shower into the space 😅. I might go 36” x 36” but even that may be too large. Might have to do the rounded shower as well.

I really wished that the shows the push these ultra luxury kitchen & bath remodels were not marketed to the masses. Some of the features that they push really aren't for the average consumer/customer. It raises expectations and feeds into the "keeping up with the jones" and creates demand that really isn't necessary. I like shows like Jeff's that help us remodel what we have at a more reasonable expectation, and not price our homes out of the markets most of us are in.

On the 5" gap between wall and vanity-- Rev-a-shelf style pull-outs could work. I don't think they have a 5" but you could probably make your own. Or just find a way to add a toekick and small door so you can store stuff in the gap. I think 5" is probably large enough to fit tp rolls. You can top it with a shelf to add more surface for things to sit on.

regarding 2x10 sizing discrepancies (or ANY two-by sizes), the shrinkage was originally largely due to moisture removal through "baking" in kilns, but nowadays, even though they have the technology to be precise, they still go by the old sizing, both for consistency, and to save money ;)

It goes out the side of the basement and up the outside of the house and stops 3 ft before the roof, with no cover. We added an under cabinet air vent at the kitchen sink and it no longer backs up at least. Apperently I need a new vent added in.😮

Bah, I missed the livestream. I have nearly completed a reno in my own bathroom-- well, I'm a little more than halfway through. ROI matters if you intend to sell within a few months or years, but having something you enjoy or that functions if you plan to stay there longterm is more practical. Not saying to spend more $, just saying to make it how you like it. What is on-trend now might be considered "out" in the future. Never liked tile so I will never put it in my bathrooms. I hate cleaning grout. I like my custom vanities that came with the house. One needs to be made taller & have the countertop re-laminated & green lavatory replaced. Both could use some paint. But I like them better than the mdf particle board garbage for sale in stores now. I will say that access to the plumbing and how the P-trap etc will fit is crucial. Don't get those vanities that make it hard to get to your P-trap for maintenance or make it hard to shut off your water supply lines. Manufacturers don't think about the plumbing when they design stuff. One of the reasons the old vanities are staying is because some extra strong & thick caulking was used to secure them and it would destroy the walls to try to remove them. Paint that is easy to clean is essential. Satin may show more flaws but it is easier to clean. Something mold/mildew resistant is good. Toilet should be more important- especially to people with mobility issues or who are aging. Comfort/chair height ones with good flush can make a difference. ADA height Totos are just a hair too tall for me. Toto Entrada chair height is a good one though. Has the 3" flush valve so it flushes easily. Reasonable price for a Toto. Soft close seats are good. Plastic is better than wood since they don't rot. Add in a bidet seat attachment and its even better-- but make sure the attachment doesn't interfere with the closing of the seat. When I renovated I replaced towel bars, tp holder, shower curtain rod, shower curtain, curtain rings, & added a robe hook. I still plan to change out the electrical outlets & switches to newer ones and to add a vanity light-- which is going to be a bear, but needs to be done to have better lighting. Plan to change out the faucet. Current one drips non-stop and company that made it went out of business. I'm going to build a mirror. I have a store-bought mirror with no frame so I'm going to make a frame. Will also be painting the door & adding a mirror to the door. More light reflection. I absolutely agree about the framing. Its also good to know where your studs are, where your joists are, and where your plumbing drains and vents are. You may plan to put your toilet in a certain spot only to find a joist is in the way. Or that you can't get the vents to go where they need to go. I use Sketchup to plan things out and I make note of whatever measurements I can get and see how things will fit. This has helped me to adapt/change plans on some things. Demo can suck. It's when you find not so happy surprises-- like termite damage, studs not spaced properly, studs not even in one piece (yeah, found that in my walls), water damage, mold, mice, etc. Skilsaw, pry bar, oscillating attachment, hammer, lots of swearing.... LOL. I had to tear out tongue-and-groove boards, put in new studs, shim up the wazoo, & add blocking just to be able to attach the cement boards. There certainly wasn't a permit inspection when the rough plumbing in my house was done. Inspector never would have let it pass when they cut through an entire friggin' joist. I mean ALL the way through. Didn't just notch it- they cut the entire thing out in the middle and then did nothing to reinforce it. I'm going to have to change my tub's drain location and go with a direct drain instead of standard type to get around it & will have to shore up the old joist. Fortunately, I have pvc cutters and know how to put PVC together for the drains & vents. Will have to figure out how to get the app to check for slope to make sure I get the 1/4" per ft drop or rise. Electrical where I live is extremely expensive and the only licensed electrician in the area won't come out to where I live, but my best friend is certified and replacing outlets & switches or changing out light fixtures isn't a big deal. Always check to make sure lines aren't hot. Shut off breakers. Pay attention to what wires go where, etc. Wago lever nuts are your friends. If you're not confident don't touch it bc electrocution sucks. Only one of my 3 bathrooms will have drywall. The other 2 have wood paneling from the 70s that have patterns printed on them. They are getting some paint & baseboards. One is getting wainscoting because the panels delaminated high enough that baseboards can't cover. Glad I'm dodging the 25% by not doing tile. LOL. Prefab surrounds + vinyl sheet ftw. Some people don't like it but I don't care. If this place ever sells its for the property and location rather than the house. 30+ acres in the middle of the woods. Man, installing a new light plate is one of the easiest things to do. LOL. One of the first DIY things I did in this house. It's stupidly easy if you don't drop the screws. LOL. One of the vanities in my house has a formica backsplash just loosely tacked to the wall with thin strips of wood. The other has no backsplash but I might be adding some baseboard as backsplash & sidesplash later on. Thanks for the reminder on that. There's a place that used to be called Surplus Warehouse that is about an hour away from me. They sell unfinished oak cabinets. They are a bit rough-- need sanding and doors adjusted sometimes, but they are sturdy. You can stain them or paint them and not have to worry about them breaking as easily as the crap from big box stores. We did my friend's kitchen with those cabinets. If you have arthritis or a bad back, there is a toiletmaster lift jack that you can use to pick up your toilet and move it out of the way. Best to set it back down in a plastic bag if it will be awhile before reinstalling. You can pull your old toilet out that way and wheel it away, then get the new one and use the sticks that come with it to line up the holes over the bolts. We used it at my house and a few times at my friend's house. Also, if your old toilet doesn't flush well, its good to replace it.

Hi Jeff, I was planning to buy a land and hire the construction of my dream house in Quebec. I was wondering, how much can I save if I do the some finishing. Let's say that I hire specialists to make the foundation, the framing, roof, sliding, electrician and plumber. In contrast, I will the do the insulation of the basement, the drywall of the house, installing the outlets, and lights, vents, flooring, moulding, stairs, kitchen, paint. I have an old house and I have some experience learning from you, but I am limited in space to grow this 900 sqft house. Is something that you will recommend to do in order to save money? How much I could save and what would be the process for hiring different specialists in warranty?

I love Jeff but his explaination of the plumbing is a hell of a stretch.. In ontario, the building drain which is the drain that everything in your house eventually drains to before going out to the municipal system is minimum 4" and has to end in a minimum 3" stack all the way to open air. That means a contractor cant legally make it 2" anywhere. The only way that would happen is if that stack is not the main stack but rather just a branch that becomes a separate stack. As long as you tie your vents for the new plumbing into another part of the vent system that is equal or greater in diameter and above the flood level rim of the highest fixture in the new plumbing you're fine. Also, macerating toilets, which are the toilets that discharges with a pump are not allowed if there is a gravity sanitary drainage system available below. Leave that stuff to professionals who study and actually know the code that is relevant to where you live!!
