If i may add, it is a good thing to think about the fees you will paid with your bank. It's possible that you pay too much fee each time you will withdrew money (japan is still a country where a lot of place only accept cash) so you will pay like a taxe each time you use an ATM or even when you paid with your credit card if you haven't the right one I typicaly use a card who negate all of the cost but cost a little more that what i used to be and return the costly card when i return home. All in all it depend of your bank but i suggest to think about it : ) PS: I definitivly recommand to stay in a Ryokan too. Minshuku is also a great option to stay. It's better to do it when you speak a little bit of japanese but i'm really eager to try it! (i'm going to Japan in 20 days and i will stay in minshuku in some cool place like an ancient japanese school or in a traditional house)

Thanks for the comment, yes it is. I found that some family run restaurants only took cash and did have to take some out whilst in Japan. I was advised the cash machines in 711 were the best that work with international cards. I had two cards I could use in Japan without any fee beyond the exchange rate on the day. Which was Monzo and Chase. Hope you share how Minshuku was once you have visited, it sounds very cool to stay in an old school!

@@wilkowanders I can do that. The old school was nearly abandonned due to the rural exodus and the decline in population. They transform the school into a minshuku and on paper it look like a great idea. It's alongside the kumano kodo trail where they are really a lot of cool stuff. Among other things they are the oldest onsen recorded, the highest waterfall of all japan and the biggest torii gate! For the record i know that some other school where transform into munshuku or hotel in japan but i think it still very rare.
