I also line the bottom of the drain hole with gypsum which is a soil softener. It leeches into the clay soil at the bottom and allows water to drain. I fill the bottom of the drain hole with plain sand. Over many years, the fine clay particles will fill into the sand, making it like concrete, but improving the drainage of the surrounding soil too.

We found staking as low as possible will allow trunk to exercise even more without pulling out of ground. Now to stake a nursery tree because it cannot stand on its own could be sign of circling root problems rather than growing radially outbound. Unfortunately specimen in this video had lacked good strong trunk taper because number one horizontal branches lower down had been removed prematurely and number two wooden Pole to encourage straight trunk growth actually detrimentally results in growing even taller once tree realizes extra support. Also there will be a location where no roots are growing from trunk where wooden Pole interfered below ground. And why best not to use as a ground supported stake. If installing a hardwood tree expected to survive 30 years or more. Take caution if ever purchasing size of a potted tree similar to one in video which already could be 3 years old or even older. As up potting process potentially creates suspect tree even if just one circling root had not been pruned back to when it was still growing straight away from trunk. Also most trees stop lengthening Tap Root after 2 years, then by year three a tree focuses on horizontal roots which one can only hope also produces vertically downward Sinker roots. If you are growing your own tree or planting a small bare root whip liner, it's best to temporarily retain lower horizontal branches along trunk which will help shade and especially increase girth along with good trunk taper. And by heading back or subordinating lower Temporaries as much as third Bud back from trunk from one to as many as three seasons. It will keep final removal cut small in diameter. Also make sure to prevent any vertically upward vegetative type branching that could develop into a competing co dominant stem.

Should try the Ellen White method of planting. I modified it with my own version such as surrounding the upside down bucket with ag pipes with sock then two 3 inch pipes in each corner all the way to the bottom. It aerates the roots and can be used for deep root watering later in its life.
@Doubl3JD

Great video, very correct advice - some recommend to “mound up” which does fix drainage and aeration issues, however the downside to this, especially with younger trees is rooting in takes longer and is more susceptible to rooting out of the planting zone (being ripped out of the hole) because of improper planting/staking methods Great job explaining guys!

i've learned something about the hardpan of caliche like material at my place is it acts like a impermeable layer starting at about a foot below the surface. and every time i plant something i instinctively want to create a wider deeper area of good material for whatever to grow in, so i'll build that hole like that. and when then rains come of even plain watering over a short time, you think the tree would be happy yet all i'm basically doing no matter how much around the tree i build "above grade" slope away from the plant, the depth of hole i created isn't difficult to overwater in any situation and essentially i've built a non draining pocket that will forever drive you nuts as your trees struggle only to eventually die a very short lived life to the undraining holes. so picture that as a layer and do not dig into the hard drainless pan, or at least you'd have to build a subdrain burrito style permeated, rock filled and wrapped well to carry the water away. which would be near commercial development for tract homes "impossibly difficult." so leave the hard pan and truck in some material to make a small mound or hill that you're going to plant on. forget the native or natural fall or slope to fix. add to it to make the depth the plant needs to grow for it's life. even if you dig a hole that hole will heal itself into the clay layer it's in, healing i mean the hard layer. a couple of seasons and it's going to turn right back into the layers around it. mulch it whatever you try will only be short lived because it's more powerful and bigger than us.. it'll never be fixed when you dig into it. even if you dug the entire plot out, 10'x10 or 100'x100' you basically crate an underground lake. that's the only hope, california high deserts are notorious for crap dirt. clay, rock. silt and sand deep usually all one or the other too much. it's just a lot cheaper and easier to move into the LA basin or san fernando. alfalfa grows well in it. without any problems. the little purple flowers in that grass (alfalfa) is delicious. you don't have to moo to like it. and it's nutritious as heck. high deserts aren't cheaper to live in. with the exremes heat and cold and wind and sun will more than equal what savings you have in cheaper mortgage. all the way around.

Great job. Obviously professionalism comes from years of not just personal experience but also following up after planting. One idea we found that definitely works when ground is compacted has been mulching by air Excavating a grid of surrounding holes which could help Coax new roots radially outbound past root ball and excavated hole boundary. In fact irrigating just outside of excavated pit has been proven to encourage new Root exploration. Here in the Midwest I'm afraid we've discovered the hard way how potted trees even certain fabric bag grown should automatically be suspect of producing less than optimal root system. Especially because up potting process could produce several layers of hidden circling roots. Intense street level Parkway tree observations have also sadly revealed slicing vertically using sharp Spade or blade alongside outer root ball or just teasing pot bound Roots loose fails to correct circling root Direction. And only by completely shaving outside and bottom of root ball back to location before Roots had been deflected has now become ANSI standard best management practice.. As someone who also plants hundreds of trees each year it has now become perfectly common to find original birth grade of trunk buried some two to 12 in deep. Thus We've began a campaign of educating both trade folks and public how ever widening trunk flares had evolved in order to manage against stem girdling roots. For example if a noose was placed around your neck, or placed around one's shoulders. Which would be easier to break out of? Sweeping trunk flare clean of any accumulating organic matter each spring also prevents any Wayward ground roots from higher access above surrounding grade level where trunk produces less expanding girth.

I also have rock hard clay and my method which works fantastically is to dig as deep as possible, at least 2ft and 2 or 3 times the width of the plant container. I add sand and compost to the point where its slightly softer than the native soil but not too soft so that water retention is about the same as the native clay but a little better. I drill 3or4 2" holes inside the holes.

There are lot of amendments that can be confusing. What do you recommend for fruit trees to be planted in northern california? Also if soil has clay/rocks - do you throw them away? What kind of mulch you recommend? Thanks
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 3 жыл бұрын
For fruit trees in your area I recommend 5 cups of our John&Bob's Blend mixed into the native soil backfill throughout with the heaviest concentration of Blend near the top of the root ball w/ Blend in actual contact with the fruit tree roots. If your soil is clay like, I would leave the clay soil and use it in the backfill broken up as much as possible. Large rocks should be removed, small rocks can remain and used as part of the backfill. For top dressing mulch we use bulk Douglas fir bark/wood and shredded cedar. For individual fruit trees where the quantity needed is modest there are good bagged products available at nurseries and at Home Depot and Lowe's like Amend, other Kellogg's products, Redwood Topper, etc -almost any wood based mulch will work well. Thanks for your comment :)

If you can not afford to rent those machine to drill very deep clay soil , can you still plant your citrus fruit tree in a wide hole 3x bigger than your pot tree, another word plant it in a wide shallow clay soil hole that has good drainage? Can you mix 50% clay soil with 50% Kellogg organic garden soil and 10% of gypsum. Top it with dead leaf and mulch? Video Sound like you are the professional but what about tropical fruit tree like durian tree, plant the same way ( back fill clay soil)? Excellent video, Thank you for the education.
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 жыл бұрын
If the hole is deep enough that the top 1/3 of the root ball will be above soil then that should be fine. Do as much ripping/tilling as you can, a drill machine is not a must. 50/50 is good. You could even do more garden soil and use 20-40% native soil. After ripping you can add generous amounts of gypsum, then rough grade the area to get it within 1-2 inches of final grade. If able, add our Blend and Penetrate or a high quality compost next. After planting is complete and amendments added applying a 1.5 inch layer of mulch is excellent! Yes, the back fill with native soil (or a portion of native soil) is important so you don’t create an interface which makes it more likely that roots will not grow into the native soil and water won’t drain well. Happy to help and glad you enjoyed the video! :)

@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 жыл бұрын
That's ok, now you know the ideal practice for next time you plant trees! You can still apply a generous amount of blend around the trees, the heaviest concentration being near the top of the root ball. Then apply a top dressing mulch. When you fill the hole with different soil it makes it more unlikely for the tree to root out into the native soil and the different texture you create within the hole will inhibit drainage. Just keep an eye on them and monitor soil drainage to make sure it is draining properly.

If so, backfill that hole with the native soil and water it every 3rd day or so for 2-3 weeks to get it to settle completely. Then use our Blend with the lodgepole stakes and flexible ties just as I demonstrated in the video. Plant just slightly high like in my video and water it in to remove air pockets as per the video. You don't incorporate organic matter into the native clay soil, is there a reason. I use a lot of well composted manure and organic matter with the native soil, mixed up well, and that helps here, but I'm sure you have your reasons and have a lot of thoughts put into this, because you have hard pan soil. Okay I've watched more and I see why you do what you do, but where I am, it's very successful to incorporate organic matter, mixed well with the native soil and mound it at least slightly if the sight is challenging. I don't like the high mounds that some call mulch volcanoes, I think it's a bad idea. I like what you are doing there.
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 жыл бұрын
You are using organic matter with your clay soil and mixing very thoroughly, and that can work well and it sounds like you've had good success. The concern is we don't want to create a completely different soil inside the planting hole along with an interface where backfill and native meet. That interface can make it difficult for the tree to root into the native soil.

@@JohnandBobs It seems my firewall was blocking your shop page, which is the landing page for the website. Seems some of your security certificates are out of date according to the program I use. I selected Windows Diagnostic and it just loaded the website, but I'd have the developers or whichever company manages your website look into that.

Why do you need to dig a big hole if you're just returning the same soil?
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 3 жыл бұрын
A hole is needed because the new root ball requires space. A hole is needed also because the new tree site frequently has compacted soil with hard layers that don't allow for healthy exchange of air and water. Physically breaking up all compacted layers and hardpan is the best way to aerate the soil. Native soil backfill is one of the best ways to encourage the new tree roots to venture out beyond the new hole.

@@JohnandBobs really? Put back the clay soil will not work for my 15 gal tropical durian tree. It will die.

@@tavyfavorite1149 Just responded to your other comment! Putting back a mix of organic garden soil and native soil will work as well. What we want to avoid is having a completely different soil surrounded by the native clay soil.

This soil did not drain well and had very little organic material so I would define it as clay soil. Regardless, the tips mentioned in the video can be used for a range of troublesome soil types. Thanks for watching! 😃

The native soil here is hard and clay, but we drilled it about 10' deep, 24" diameter and then settled the drilled hole w/ 20days of deep watering. The auger changes the diggability and porosity of the soil dramatically. -John

The female version of this tree is a homeowner's nightmare. It sheds large clusters of berries throughout the year and it's almost impossible to keep up with it.
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 ай бұрын
That is true, although there are some smart, dedicated professionals who advocate for the planting of the female Pistache and other female species . They make the point that the popularity of male trees produces pollen dominated, allergic communities, school sites etc. Male trees produce pollen and female trees take in the pollen and produce fruit. Their belief is the landscape industry preference for male trees produces spikes in pollen because of the associated allergic effects. As you might guess there are other dedicated plant scientists that don't share these concerns and it gets complicated. If plant and tree pollen troubles/interests you, it is an interesting area to research and learn about.
