I always plant trees with my friends when I was a 10years old and we have tree planting in school every year so nostalgic... now I live in the city with super tiny yard I hope I will go vacation in my province soon!

just purchased two lovely smoke trees from Lowe’s - the root crown was buried halfway into the pot! Had to remove 4-5” before locating the all-important root flare. Had I planted per these directions, my trees might’ve had a few good years, but they DEFINITELY would have died long before their time.

I liked that you kept mulch away from the trunk/bark (wish you’d emphasized that). The trees in your Bolingbrook IL store are dead and/or near-dead from being planted too deeply and over-mulched.

As long as it takes for the tree to sufficiently root itself into your soil. It's usually safe to remove after 1 year, but you can check by gently moving the trunk of the tree and watching for root ball movement. If the root ball no longer moves, the tree has established it's roots into the soil around it and you should be clear to remove the stake!

Rookie mistake. Failure to identify the root flare, and not planting the tree such that the root flare is at grade level. This tree will not thrive to its potential.
