G'day! I up pot my passion fruit and plant it into a bigger container to minimize sucker growth in my garden. Growing tips are provided in this how to plant and grow passion fruit video.
Grafted passion fruit are more likely to send suckers, but not all grafted plants will.
I do this as I have very sandy soil as I live on an inland island and you can see the example of the suckers from the grafted passion fruit next door.

G'day! You might find this recent video interesting... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r92qbK2IyKrNgHk.htmlsi=rcUPWh9ixrtI-X1t I explain passion fruit suckers in more detail and I really hope it helps people avoid potential problems. Just a note... If you know that your 2 passion fruit plants are NOT grafted, you don't need to be concerned too much about sucker vines and putting them in the ground should be OK. I hope that made sense. Thanks so much for watching my video and for taking the time to reply. Good luck! Daz.

One day many years ago....found this beautiful flowering vine creeping over my fence from a neighbors yard. Just fell in love with it. It began to grow along my own fence. So pretty! As it grew over my fence I left it alone. Butterflies loved it. Ok...so it didn't take long for it to reach the one tree in my backyard. From the fence to my tree's branches it's like it bypassed the trunk...and grew...and grew...and fkn grew. Before I realized it my tree was covered in these beautiful purple flowers and there was no stopping it. That stupid flower nearly killed a giant tree. While it was dormant (and very dead looking...it's sneaky that way) spent days on ladders raking it off the tree and severing the vines from it's roots. Spent ages trying to kill it...a little flower blooms every now and then. It does not die! Definitely keep it in a pot people! And clean up whatever drops off of it. Or just burn it! This flower/pest is not meant for a regular yard. NOPEEEE

My daughter planted four passionfruit vines last year and this year there are at least 100 in that same space, plus many suckers that have rooted under thru the ground up to 5 feet away. They are the most prolific plant I've ever seen. We have them growing along the end of our cattle panel fence, and nearly the whole 16 foot length is covered 4 feet thick, front to back, thru and thru, with passionfruit vines. It smells so fragrant in that area. I've yet to see any actual fruit growing there on those but it could be that they are just very hard to see being as thick as they are. I know they've been pollinated as I've seen bees and other insects in those blooms going from one to another. I've also seen the larger bumble bees sleeping off their pollen drunkenness, something I've never seen before. They simply lay inside the bloom and only move when I touch them. I have recorded a few of them doing this and find it quite entertaining and interesting. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. God bless you and your family, Daz!

@@rolandotorres7112 I grow them in New England, Massachusetts to be exact and the advantage is that the suckers don’t get too invasive here. In a regular new england winter, cold and snowy, unless you have them protected outside, like you’d protect figs, they’re most likely to die. If you can create a microclimate and either protect them or plant them in pots they’ll survive for 4-6 yrs.

So your growing ornamental passion fruit ( no actual fruit ) which is not the same as normal passion fruit ( has proper passion fruit on the vines ) which does not have suckers coming up far away from the plant itself ,there is a big difference , I know the one you have as I have had it myself from Bunnings here in Australia and as far as I’m concerned it shouldn’t be sold , it’s a pest plant growing everywhere and anywhere , I recommend get rid of it and buy a proper fruiting passion fruit plant.

Thank you Daz for all the great info. My good friend gave me a potted passion fruit that I need to transplant. Thank you for the heads up about it being a prolific plant. Instead of planting it in ground, I'll just put it in a big pot so it doesn't take over our small yard. Appreciate all the advise you share with us. God bless you and your family! P.s. your dog didn't bother us at all, he is just excited playing in the background 😊.
@MyAussieGardenKitchen

G'day G B. Yes, it's such a good natured dog and so playful. We are very fortunate. In regards to the passion fruit... I do not know how small your yard is, but it would need a bit of maintaining to keep it to a smaller size in a small yard and the roots themselves should not do much damage, but it's the suckers that can come from grafted plants and sometimes non grafted in certain conditions, that can be a pain and continuously pop up in places. Just remember that the pot needs to be a large one for those roots to grow over time and if you can, I recommend protecting the pot from the sun to top the soil and roots getting too hot. You could do that by having other potted plants around it or doing a bit of DIY and making a basic wood box to encase it. Say, with old pallet wood for instance. Thanks very much for your kind words and good luck! Daz.

@@MyAussieGardenKitchen Thank you for the additional recommendation, Daz! I will certainly do that as it can get hot out here in SoCal in the summer. With your concern about suckers, do be aware that they (along with other berry plants, or even bamboo) will find their way through your drainage holes. I half expected you to put a concrete square (18" x 18" x 2") beneath the pot ... that will best control suckers. Thanks for the good info otherwise.

G'day. That's a really good point and thanks for bringing it up. 👍 I initially had a slab for it and was going to drill drainage holes on the lowest points on the sides of the pot. I actually mention this on a reply to someone just a few days ago. We had a second gas bottle installed for the house and I used it when the plumber did not bring one. I recorded the video the same day and totally forgot to mention it and I could not add it to the video after uploading. This was one of my first videos, maybe 2nd and I could have done better. What I should have done and will do... is add what you mentioned to the description. Thanks very much for bringing it up as it is such an important piece of information. All the best, Daz.

Hi from Conway, Arkansas, (USA)! I am researching Passion Flowers because I just discovered 2 or 3 of them in my garden. I have absolutely no information about them whatsoever. But, I was thinking of planting them all along my fence until I saw your video showing how large and entrenched they become. Thank you so much!! So, now I plan to plant them in large containers on either side of an arched trellis. Hopefully they'll flourish in that area, but behave themselves.
@MyAussieGardenKitchen
@MyAussieGardenKitchen 11 ай бұрын
G'day! Thanks very much for watching my video and for taking the time to comment on the video. Question: Are you able to see if they grew from seed or if they are grafted? The problem I talk about with sucker vines coming up from the roots and being a pest, is mainly on grafted passion fruit. If you are not sure about the grafting, it's where a fruiting passion fruit is cut and joined to another type of passion fruit, so it has a stronger base to grow. Unfortunately, the lower section can be aggressive in some conditions and send out the creeping suckers from its roots. You can see that a passion fruit has been grafted (joined together) just a couple of inches above the ground in most cases. It is very less likely to happen if it has grown from seed. Say, a common black passion fruit for instance. Having said that, you can certainly grow any passion fruit in large pots and cut them back to keep them under control. I cut mine back 30% each year. They will look stunning on the arched trellis. My wife's parents did that at a previous property and it looked fantastic! Sorry for any confusion and all the very best of luck. Daz.

@@MyAussieGardenKitchen How kind of you to reply!😊 I dont know if it is grafted. I will send a message to the seller. But your video helped me alot. I have fence, and I'm going to plant it near the fence, but it will have its own trellis. Im not going to let it grow on the fence. Because I have trees planted along my fence line. Im going to do as you suggest and plant it in a pot👍I'm so excited. Thank you again, and enjoy your weekend 😊
