That tip about how to remove sunflower stalks was a revelation to me, and none of the other big channels I've watched mentioned this. I'm new to gardening and didn't realize how important it was to compost the roots. Too bad I already pulled up so many weeds by the roots in my clay soil. Thanks!!

What a wonderful video!!! I learned SO MUCH!!! Of all the seeds that I've recently ordered, it appears that sunflowers are the easiest of all to start and grow! I especially love the idea of using sunflowers as a trellis for other plants! Also, I live near the ocean and I have been using natural sea water to make my French bread for many years... now I will try it to soak sunflower seeds, too! I just received my seeds in the mail yesterday and am VERY excited to plant them! Thank you!!! :) P.S.: I, too, was surprised and heartened by the info on removing stalk and leaving the roots! I would have pulled them all out! Perhaps using a shovel to "chop" the ground up a little might help the composting along? Have a "sunny flower-filled" day!!!

Lovely your garden is beautiful 💗 🌻! Question: I just put up some cattle panels as arbors above my garden beds. What do you recommended either flowers, or fragrant vines or which types of vegetable to grow over them to cover the arbor that will do well in Tucson. One arbor is standing alone is 8 1/2 feet tall the others are in my garden beds are each about 7 1/2 feet tall. I’m excited to start but unsure as to what will grow well here or is it too late in the summer now?

I grow lots of Mammoth Gray Striped Sunflowers in my gardens because even after our Summer enjoyment, all of our farm love eating them. Chickens, ducks, goats & horses get seed added to their food or as treats all winter. Actually nothing about the plant goes to waste here, even the leaves & stalks get eaten. It’s excellent fodder. I have a question though, being you grow many types & varieties… can You save seed to grow them true to type next season? Or does odd cross pollination of varieties happen. How about the ornamental varieties also? I usually just grow Gray Striped Sunflower. However I bought Black Oil Seed type Sunflowers to try this year and I’m wondering if I need to grow them away from my gray striped sunflowers, like acres away in my orchard, if I want to save seed for replanting. I can’t find any information about it, so hoping your experience can enlighten my inquiry. 😊

I don't know what I'm doing wrong... Every time I try growing from seeds, they germinate, get a couple of inches tall with their first two leaves, and then they flop over and die. I've tried outside, inside, different types of soil, watering more and watering less.

May I ask what are the tall branching sunflowers are called - Like their store/ official name, so i can buy them? With that being said, can you direct me to where i can find them? will the big box store carry them you think? Thank you Angela!

I planted sunflowers by seed a couple moths back, a smaller variety that’s non branching, next to a blue salvia. Both of these plants seem to be malnourished despite proper fertilizer. The water should be sufficient through drip system, same as back yard which is doing well...however the leaves are yellowing and brown, look dehydrated despite watering, and look malnourished to the point of withering. Any idea why these aren’t thriving in the front yard despite everything in the backyard doing well? They get direct morning and midday sun but afternoon shade from a neighboring tree. It’s becoming an eyesore in the front yard. I don’t want to pull them but I don’t know how to salvage them. Located in low desert AZ. TY

Annual plants like sunflowers and salvia will need better soil and more frequent watering than other plants in the landscape that have more developed root systems and are adapted to native soil.

@@GrowingInTheGarden I use organic potting soil, manure, and plentiful mulch to transplant the salvia and plant the sunflowers by seed in May. Maybe they weren’t getting enough water from the drip before the monsoon came in, and maybe the fertilizer wasn’t adequate. However I have the same system in the back and it should be the same transplanting/seed method and same preparation, even with late transplanting/spouting as late as early June, and everything in the back is doing very well. You should see my herbs and okra!!! Maybe it’s because the drip is set up to allocate more water in the back. I didn’t set up the drip emitters and originally it was only cactus and erosion shrubs to water down hill, not for flowers...so maybe the drip emitters in the front are not releasing enough water. I fertilized when planted and early June, but may have accidentally used citrus instead of flower nutrition...oops. At this point it’s been overcast and raining for well over a week, and the plants have not revived significantly. I think the Salvia will make it but the sunflowers look like they’re petrified and dead where they stand. I’ll leave it, see how they fare, and make changes in Fall. Thank you! 🙏

It might be slugs or rollie pollies eating seedlings before they sprout. An effective solution is to sprinkle a small amount of this slug and snail bait when you plant. It is iron phosphate with an attractant for slugs. It’s non-toxic to worms and safe to use. amzn.to/3UVvZD4
