You can plant bare root or container grown blueberries this way. Setting up the soil for some acidity is the best way to get your plants off to a great start.

Can’t wait for the blueberry in a pot video! I just received my plants from groworganic. 2 northern hb, 2 southern and I planted them in barrels 2 plants each. I used some berry tone that I mixed with a regular potting soil in the hole and top dressed with soil acidifier since I couldn’t find bagged soil for acid-loving plants. How often should I put soil acidifier around the plants in the barrels? I’ve never grown blueberries before. Thanks Gary!

Love it ⚡ when found a bunch of cheap blueberry plants, I went on a blueberry research thing on youtube and found some interesting University webinars and stuff (I cant recall what University but it did come up as one of the top search results). And they pretty much say what you say here! One thing that kind of differed was that the ph isnt the issue but instead creating a "reductive environment" (basically has less nutrients and life). And a peat moss *is* reductive! The same goes for fertilizing: they use things like diluted Apple cider vinegar and yoghurt. Sounds weird but natural in the reductive context 👍 also, Citric acid was really good which is nice since I guess most animals dislike that smell? Really interesting plants ✨

Very interesting. This set up is pretty much how I do it at planting. I added my fertilizing video and it is pretty straight forward. You definitely dont have to over feed them. Thanks! I have a pink blueberry bush she's about a 6 year root now and she's been in a huge bin next to my deck doing at most excellent there- already budding all over as usual this year. Last year the Asian beetles decided to stay longer than I've ever experienced before and what did they go after? My blueberry bush! Id go out every single morning and use a milking net to swoop them up and then I have a neighbor in the afternoon come by and swoop then I do at night. Swoop action seems to be better option to save the berries. I cannot believe the damage they still do there's that many flocking to my property! More going just after my bush. I'll be selling my house and relocating hence why the bush is in the container all this time- covid pretty much held things back but for now I'm here yet another summer it's looking like. I've never seen Asian beetles this bad ever before. They were swarming me they were that bad last year. They just never left it seemed. Concerning. Have you figured a way to deter them or anything else to keep them at least off one spot like they are going after my blueberry bush? The damage is pretty bad when beforehand this bush does amazing right here- full sun most of the day they do excellent! 😊

When I get a "bare root" fruit tree from Stark Brothers, there is nothing around the roots but a dozen or so wet newspaper ribbons. The roots are almost completely exposed. Of course the tree is sealed in a plastic bag and is shipped in a strudy box.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN at 2:37, you say that your pH is “..higher here. More alkaline, almost a 7”. A pH of 7 is literally a neutral pH, not alkaline at all. Would have been more accurate if you had, “the soil here is less acidic, almost a 7.” Great video, though. I'm looking at moving the blueberries that I have in 5gal pails to under our backyard pine tree to help solve soil acidity problems almost right away; just need to clean all the other wood waste from under the tree.

Can you use white vinegar to the water ? To make it acidic.
@willsolarski8550
@willsolarski8550 3 ай бұрын
I could be wrong, but I don't think that would be a good idea. Liquid fertilizers (in this case vinegar) are absorbed very quickly, this might end up actually hurting and possibly killing your plant. I would recommend getting a slow release fertilizer specifically made for acid loving plants.🌱
@taylorshomestead3934
@taylorshomestead3934 3 ай бұрын
Agree. Home Depot or Lowe’s Carrie’s a small bag that says soil acidifier ( has a pic of hydrangeas on it), that’s what I use every spring along with fertilizer. For fertilizer I use a small bag called berrytone. I did a little trench around plant about 6 inches out and add that stuff to it and cover back up with soil, pat down then water.
@michaelpelletier
@michaelpelletier 3 ай бұрын
I have done it for a quick fix and my Blueberries loved it. The mix I used was about a 1/8 to 1/4 of a cup of vinegar to 4 cups of water. A reminder that white vinegar is 5% acetic acid by volume (pickling and cleaning vinegar is higher percentage), so if you are further diluting it with water the pH will become higher (less acidic). Like Gary said in the video you don't want to do it everyday. Also, use rainwater.. Rainwater is more acidic (not sayign acid rain) than tap water.
