So many people think you have to have expensive equipment to plant food plots, but here is a great way to plant rice without many tools at all. If you can control your water and have the right situation, this will definitely work for you.
Many times our duck holes never dry up completely. Use this to your advantage. Simply get the water down to 2-4 inches deep. Sew approximately 100 pounds per acre of your preferred rice seed. Let it set in the water approximately 48 hours. After that time you should see a little white tip on the seed. Drain your water at that point. When the seed hits the mud it should stick and sprout. This is the first and often times hardest step to producing a rice crop. After it all has sprouted and you have a nice stand, you can then spray or fertilize if u see fit. Even without spraying often times it will grow up with native species of plants which combined with the rice will work great for duck food as well.

i have a question. for starters I'm in southeast Texas and working on getting two or three duck impoundments built on a family ranch, each pond about 21-26 acres in size. They will have wells on them. if i were to plant rice, would i flood those impoundments to where there is about 2-3-4 inches of water across the whole thing then take a quad and spread rice like rusty did in this video and let soak for 48 hours then start to drain the water off and once that is done, do i need to go back and disk it all up in order to get the rice further into the dirt or do I just let nature take its course and leave it undisturbed after i drain the water off and let it grow just like any other plant? I'm really trying to learn about different food strategies for waterfowl, I'm a 19 year old construction science major at A&M University and apart of a construction family so i have equipment at my disposal. I've been duck and goose hunting pretty much my whole life since i was 8. i know my fair share of the do's and don'ts but this is my first gamble on building and planting food for waterfowl. We're along the Texas coast out side of port o Connor, Texas so i would also like anybody else opinions on if i should do rice or millet. i know several people that do both in the area and i know rice does well early season like for teal and stuff i just don't know how well it will hold up throughout the whole season, if maybe a millet mixture will sustain the area for longer. If Anybody has an input or some advice please let me know!

What month do you plant rice in Arkansas for ducks ? Do you have any issues with rules against baiting ducks, manipulating feed, etc ?

As long as you just plant and flood it your legal, just can’t mow it or knock it down. Probably plant June July at latest

I wonder that too! The way I see it, it is like improving an habitat as the rice grows on it's own without help other than seeding. Wild rice is native to north america. On the contrary of using commercially (artificial) cultivated grain grown in controlled circumstances that you use to bait ducks over. That is legal too, but only 10 days prior to hunting. Is it baiting if some rice is left over since you sewed it in the middle of summer? I don't know.

He uses clearfield 153. I planted this year had good results so far

John water seeded just like he did. Wait 48 hrs then pull water off. I’m at flowering to milk stage as of now. I had some minor grass hoppers damage, now I’ve got stink bugs but so far heads are doing okay knock on wood. Going to see how the grain fills with insect pressure. Don’t really need to make quality grain so I think I’ll be okay. Knock on wood! **

@@John-in2bv You bet man. So far rice I planted in one 8 acre field on June 12th is heading with most in milk stage. Other 8 acre field I planted on June 16th is at flowering stage. The field planted on June 12th has had a better supply of water to the roots so its heading quicker than the later planted field. I've got grasshopper damage on lots of heads but it's minor. Not enough to significantly reduce the yield. Stink bugs damaged kernals as well but again, not enough to warrant pesticide since I'm farming for ducks. Also it's $1600 for a crop duster to hit it so I decided against it. Now Im just waiting on this damn rain to reside so I can stop worrying about the Ouachita River from flooding!
