Thank you. Most videos I’ve seen say that seeds have all the energy they need to get started and while that may be true adding fertilizer allows for a little more forgiveness if I’m late with the liquid feed.

Precisely! Much better said than I put it in the video ;) I came around to this way of thinking when I realized that most pros (that I pay attention to anyhow) are just planting their seeds directly into very fertile potting soil and relying on that all the way until transplant date.

I use a label printer and make a label for each seedling. That label follows the plants from seed tray to potting up pots and into the garden. Each plant can easily be identified when I collect seeds at the end of the season. I keep all the tags, wash them and reuse them next year. After 3 years, I'm still using the same tags.

It’s my first time trying those seed starting cells with the holes on the bottom… and I can tell you firsthand that it is very possible to not fill them with enough soil. Some of mine were half full! lol. I had great germination for tomatoes. I still remember over seeding and putting 3 in each cell my first time. It was painful to have to cut those extras off.

A couple of days ago I was told to avoid leggy tomato plants and have shorter stronger seedlings you can turn your grow light on at the first sign of germination and just leave it on for the first 72 hours and after that set your light timer like you normally would. I’ve never tried it but I will next year.
@NextdoorHomestead
@NextdoorHomestead Ай бұрын
I've never tried that but I wouldn't be surprised if it's effective. Etiolation is almost always a result of the first few days and I often leave my lights on for ~20 hours a day anyhow (not always, depends on conditions).

Fungus gnats... that is why I make my own seed starting mix. Like most people who start seeds for transplant, I start them indoors. Anything with peat moss, will most certainly have fungus gnat eggs. You can either sterilize your mix or grow outside. If you don't, you will most certainly have some new friends in your home/grow space. I wouldn't recommend using small cell trays. Tomatoes grow fast. The constant up-potting of the tomato will affect potential fruit production.

Hello when you add fertilizer to the seedling starter mix would it be ok to add osmocote?
@NextdoorHomestead
@NextdoorHomestead 3 ай бұрын
I haven't used osmocote so I can't speak from experience, but I would probably not add it directly to the soil. Too easy to burn the vulnerable seedling roots.

The thing I hate most about seed starting stuff is the lack of water and the *poof* I get in my mouth when dumping it into my 5 gallon buckets before adding water 😂

I have a question I bought some soil it’s from nectar for the gods #4 soil. Went to a place that they primarily sell stuff to grow weed and I’m just trying to grow tomatoes. Will this soil work or should I switch the soil my tomato plant is about 12-16” tall and it had a yellow flower blooming was in a little container when I received it. What should I do?
@NextdoorHomestead
@NextdoorHomestead 3 ай бұрын
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that brand or line of potting soil =(. At first glance, it looks appropriate in terms of ingredients, although I would personally add a side dressing of tomato or veggie fertilizer. At that size, you definitely want it in the ground or it's final (big) container. I'd remove the flowers for now until it's established and about 18" tall. Assuming it's an indeterminate variety. Best of luck!

@@NextdoorHomesteadya I actually have it in a 5 gallon bucket is that big enough? Also how often should I fertilize?
@NextdoorHomestead
@NextdoorHomestead 3 ай бұрын
@@Amordil 5 Gallon is sort of the absolute minimum. If this is your first growing season, I think it's fine but they will do better in a 7 or 10 gallon. I've got a full video on fertilizing tomatoes if you want to check that out. Hard to condense into a comment! =)

I'm surprised that you add fertilizer, as I've always heard that it is best to wait until there are true leaves to add any nutrients. Hmmmm.
@NextdoorHomestead
@NextdoorHomestead 3 ай бұрын
Great point - I'm glad you brought this up! That's totally the conventional wisdom and what I used to do (and share as a best practice) as well. But I noticed in my own plants that the mixes without significant fertilizer, like many seed starting mixes, produced seedlings with deficiencies. It's technically true that they don't need nutrients from the soil right away, but in practice it's much easier. I was sold when I realized that commercial growers, including organic growers I admire... just use potting mix. Really good potting mix, but still ;)
