One of the biggest questions I get from new drummers is how to drum roll. Specifically, how to play a clean double stroke drum roll. This lesson will teach you the mechanics of a good drum roll, how to increase drum roll speed, and a link to a free program I have on increasing your drum roll speed.

I'm a self taught drummer. I have a lot of rhythmic experience from playing the tabla (Indian percussion instrument), and my way of learning was by playing to songs and applying what I learned in tabla to drums. I don't feel the best technically - I can't do all sorts of crazy chops and fills that easily now. It seems that this would be a great way to get started in that direction and learn more over time.
@tkenyon1988
@tkenyon1988 4 жыл бұрын
I am in the same situation - Just bought a kit again, comes in couple days and rather than just go at it again with my old sytle of playing and learning, i am concentrating on becoming technically tighter (i lack a lot of the basic fundamentals that can't be picked up by just learning to play a long to tracks)

I know this is an old video but I just wanted to stop give my thanks for this video. I grew up before the internet really took off and you’d have to pay someone for information like this. My uncle was a master at playing the drums and always wondered about the “magic” of certain techniques. I saw this video and bought a practice pad and sticks and started practicing this. After just a few days I’m starting to get better. My biggest flaw is that I’m right handed and boy you have to be fluid in both hands. I actually do really good with my right hand because of it being dominant and having really good dexterity in it. My left hand, when I first started, was like trying to hold a stick with a brick for a hand. I subbed to your channel and I’m hoping I get really good at this. Thank you.

Thank you Stephen!! As begginer this technique has been driving me insane with frustration!! I think I had an "ah ha!!" moment. I couldn't understand what was meant by bounce. I thought you had to let gravity just drop the stick which made absolutely no sence to me because speed would be completely governed by terminal velocity!!! I knew there was something else going on. I got so frustrated with my friend who was trying to teach me saying "You JUST bounce the sticks" I whacked him with the sticks!! 😂

The circular motion derives as the Whip Cream roll Buddy Rich learned from the New Orlean drummers. That style of roll has been around for a hundred years now.
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 5 жыл бұрын
PanchoPlant sure, totally agree. I lived and gigged in NOLA for 3 years so I’m very familiar. And that circular motion is very common in creating a smooth buzz roll (something the drummers down there are insanely good at). But, it is much harder to get a consistent and even double stroke roll by adding a whipping, circular motion. Ive listened and studied most of the drummers from that area. And if you go in to a drum line situation, orchestral, etc. you need to know how to perform a traditional double stroke roll. So when I teach, we start with the basic mechanics as I broke out here. Learning hybrid ways of rolling later down the road is great. But they help little if you can’t play an even double stroke roll. Circular motions will only compound the issue at the start. building off of a good foundation is also key. Great discussion though.

Amazing video! Something that always bugged me when going for RRLL stuff was people telling me "you have to aim to make your Rs sound the same as your Ls", but in this video we can clearly differentiate one side from the other. I also reckon that due to a lot of subtle differences (like where exactly we end up hitting the drums, angle, acoustics), it SHOULD be incredibly hard to have the same sound from the two different strokes. Not to mention the difference in thee drumsticks themselves. So my biggest question is: should we really aim for that "same sound" feeling? Or should we focus on our subjective power and tempo more? (on that regard, I think the latter is better than the former ^^, but I want to hear more ideas!)
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 5 жыл бұрын
DanBC people differ on their opinion with this. Although I’ve never heard a drummer whole left sounded like their right. I think you should strive for evenness in your rolls. But to me, your hands will sound different because they are different. I tried for years to have my right sound like my left and vice versa. But they are different hands and they will sound slightly different. That being said, the goal is a smooth and even roll. Good discussion though and one I’ve thought a lot on.

@kstogie
@kstogie 5 жыл бұрын
If your hands sound very distinctly different, something is off. Everyone is weaker with one hand and you may be closing the diddle or getting a weak second stroke with the weak hand. Focusing on smooth, open, and even strokes will help the hands sounds similar enough. A good open double stroke should sound like a single stroke of the same tempo. If they don't, you are likely having the above mentioned problems (closed diddles and/or weak second stroke).

Hope I’m not too too late to responding. (I’ve been a percussionist for about 7 years now) 1. Even with no experience moving drumsticks isn’t too difficult but since you’ve been practicing that way you should already have it down. Obviously though the drum sticks are going to be a bit heavier and bigger so those should be about the only differences. 2. it was pretty normal for me to get pain in my wrists when I was starting off but you should become numb to that pain pretty quickly.
@graemeozzie2251
@graemeozzie2251 Жыл бұрын
This is helpful but I the actual wrist technique was not given much time in this video. I'm still struggling with understanding that. There's a LOT of mechanics going on that I think a seasoned drummer might just take for granted. What exactly does "bounce" mean? How exactly are the fingers used? The stick hold, grip firmness at different stages of the strokes. I'd like to see an intense focus on that hand technique the same way guitarists deep dive into pick angles, wrist movement etc.

Ron Jean-Pierre super slow. 16th notes at 40 or 50 bpm. Once they’re even at that speed, increase by 2-3 bpm at a time. Stop when the doubles become uneven or inconsistent. Take the time to build a solid foundation. The speed comes naturally once you get the mechanics down with good technique.

Please help. I tried doing 8th note doubles just like you showed at 60bps and my left hand is hurting after a while. I thought I could go for an hour since 60 would be so slow and relaxed but my left hand won't let me rebound properly. Trying to do the relaxed motion you showed, the stick flops around and is on the verge of just dropping. It feels like it's too late to retrain my hand to hold a stick properly when I;m only 26 but it's felt the same way for years.

Albino173 you’ve got a technique issue. It’s both simple and complex. Simple because you know its technique. Complex because technique takes a while to work. I’ve got a full course on hand technique in the members area on my website if you need a resource.
