How To Play A Funky Clavinet Groove - Hartigan's Keyboard Fundamentals

In this video, I talk about some of the techniques I use to play funky syncopated clavinet grooves. During the video I mention the "TouchClav" patch that I use on the Yamaha MOTIF. It's a cool sounding clav with a built in "wah" effect that's controlled by key velocity. The same patch is available on quite a few other Yamaha keyboards as well.
The Keyboard Fundamentals series is a weekly video in which I take a close look at a single element that's been a big part of my playing, and show how I use it and where it can fit in different musical situations. As the series goes on, I'd really like to talk about topics that viewers are interested in, so please do leave comments. I'll probably look to them for future video topics.

He talks about how he’s playing 8th notes, but from where the natural downbeat is, they’re really 16ths. I Not meant to be a criticism... just if a beginner to intermediate musician is learning how to read & understand things... that could mess with your mind... the patterns he shows are helpful, & you can see it would be easy to improvise with stealing/borrowing a few of these techniques...

Great stuff, you've got a decent talent for teaching too. The banjo roll tip is excellent. I mean the string bands would basically need to imply their beats with that syncopated roll, speed it up on the 3rd so you can tap a foot. Got me confused as to whether I want to listen to Stevie Wonder or frickin' Stanley Brothers m8.

I Just wanted to say THANK YOU. Omg, Ive pretty much been playing piano and writing songs more or less for my whole life. However, almost everything I do, is mostly all by EAR. I have great natural pitch and a good memory for musical tones. So for me it has always been faster & easier to just "sound out" a song by ear. (It slows me down and i really have to think hard to try and read sheet music) so, given my musical background, (fairly advanced piano player however still mostly untrained) You probably wouldnt be too surprised to learn that i also dont know a whole lot, as far as music theory goes either. (Aside from a few little things ive picked up thru experience/trial & error, etc..) So although im a huge fan of funk music, ive never really been able to break it down on my own, & strip it to bare bones, and figure out what it is exactly, that makes funk sound like funk. I even wrote an original song which (due to happy accident) came out sounding like it belongs in the funk genre. But i still couldnt really pinpoint why or how it had happened in order to try and replicate that same process! Lol. All i knew was i wrote it to a preset keyboard beat that was labeled as "off time." Anyways the entire point of my rambling was to say thank you for making this video. I just watched it for the first time today, and even though i havent got the chance to apply any of these principles to my playing yet, i still somehow feel like you explained so much to me about things ive been trying to figure out for years. I feel like your video and your technique will become an invaluable tool in my small arsenal of music books and vids that I occasionally refer back to. So thank you very much. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this with all of us. 💗 xoxo ✌😏 (subscribed to your channel too, btw.)

Mz.Melodicious thanks so much for your kind comment and for subscribing! I can relate pretty strongly to what you’re saying. I grew up with a really strong ear, to the extent that I could figure things out on my own much faster than I could learn them through reading. Even today, I’m frustrated at where my sight reading is in relation to my overall musicianship. I did study music theory quite extensively -I have a degree in composing and arranging- but I found that in my studies, rather than actually learning new concepts, I was actually putting names to things I already understood intuitively. Music theory always exists to serve the music it describes- it can be incredibly useful as a means of communicating with other musicians in a really specific way. Based on how you describe yourself, if you were to decide to study theory, I expect you’d have a fairly similar experience to the one I had. Once again, I really appreciate your comment. Best wishes!
