Hadn’t heard the song hurdy gurdy man sung by Donovan in years. Heard it just now on the series Mr Mercedes S3E3. Found it on Apple Music. Decided to search the internet to find out what the meaning was behind the song. Was totally surprised to discover that the hurdy gurdy is a musical instrument. Now the song makes total sense.

the origins are medieval however the instrument he is playing is developed basically in the baroque era.

"It means shake your bottom" no. It means Turn the Bottom, as in turn the crank on the bottom of the instrument.

other sources say its onomatopoeic, because of the repetitive warble sound (oxford dictionary), others think it comes from "hirdy-girdy" or "hurly-burly" for uproar or disorder. This is based on wikipedia.

Hello all... I'm an American and admittedly ignorant of many, many things English, but I'm learning. I have never heard of this instrument or seen one but it sounds so familiar. To me, it sounds like the pipes... does anyone else confuse the two sounds?

Thank you, It is part of welsh history was made in wales? by a french hurdy gurdy maker 1927 so I was told but I think it was the makers one , he was a worker down a coal mine?{ long story}, it was used by a disable miner to make his living for many years out side a railway station, I bought it in bits , off his son , years ago and had it fixed ,how much would you offer? it is a work of art, hand made and works perfect.

"Hurdy gurdy" is a derogatory onomatopoeic 18th century name for the instrument, and the black notes have nothing to do with wars in the Middle East. They're a 17th/18th century addition. The tune "Halfe Hannikin" is 17th century and I love spoiling people's fun.

thank you for debunking some stupid myths. Im sick and tired of larpers who saw breaveheart and played game of thrones and think that is how medieval era actually was. its very tiresome.

Thank you for the insight! I especially thank you for correcting this mans etymology. I have no clue where he got that, "Dancing instrument," part. My guess is he got it from the fact that it was I believe popular among street musicians and peasants in the 17th century. The instrument has its roots more in church music I believe and the term hurdy gurdy is much newer. I'm not sure about the word hurdy gurdy being derogatory and onomatopoeic though. All I knew is that it was an English term from the 18th century, correct me if I'm wrong. Although I was not sure what he meant by, "black notes," I'm not that musically inclined so thank you for explaining that and his foolishness.
