In this video, I show you how to play a quick backhand topspin attack.
It's a very effective shot for putting your opponent's under pressure.
In the video, you will see footage of my teammate James Ward (a top 100 player in England) playing the shot. This is a shot James plays brilliantly - much better than me.
I played with James last season, so I got to see up close how effective the shot is at putting opponent’s under pressure.

@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, you need to try and topspin the ball, rather than smash it. When you topspin the ball, it will rise over the net and the topspin will drag it down on the other side of the table.

Hi, does this technique differ much from a reverse penhold backhand? Thanks.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 6 жыл бұрын
The principle is the same. You want to get your elbow a little higher and close your bat angle. But stroke is a bit more awkward for reverse penhold, but possible to do consistently with plenty of practice.

How do you control the ball direction? Do you switch where you hit the ball on contact?
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 7 жыл бұрын
You just need move your bat in the direction you want the ball to go. So if you want the ball to go crosscourt, your bat should finish pointing crosscourt. If you want the ball to go down the line, your bat should finish point down the line. You can also turn your shoulders/waist a little to help you get the bat moving in the direction you want.

can you please explain the difference between this and a backhand flick?
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 6 жыл бұрын
You would do a backhand flick when the ball is very short, either from a short serve or a short push. By comparison, you would use the backhand technique shown in this video when the ball is deeper, either from a longer serve or in a topspin rally.

I need to know why is the quick backhand looks like a quick flat backhand is this what it suppose to do , it looks like counter hitting flat strokes.
@2534ivan
@2534ivan 5 жыл бұрын
What strikes me is that at this stroke in the table tennis the ball is hit with the top of the bat. This is clearly visible in the slow motion of the images. Why is this not mentioned in the technical explanation. The speed of the bat in motion is highest at the top. It is then that part of the bat that gives the ball a higher speed.

Archit Choudhary usually when you can see the pimples through the rubber, then it's dead
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 7 жыл бұрын
As a (very rough) guide - if you play once a week, you'll probably need to change your rubbers once a year. If you play 2 or 3 times a week, you'll probably need to change your rubbers twice a year. If you play 4 or 5 times a week, you'll probably need to change your rubbers every 3-4 months.

It's good to have a national top 100 player to demonstrate, but it's probably better to watch a world top 5 player. I compared the strokes of James with those by Fan Zhendong: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7uTqslimpzagIk.html The major difference is the position of the elbow. Actually, in your own demonstration, you do it well: the elbow is up high, slightly before your body and at chest height. James has his elbow almost behind his body, which impacts his wrist to be bent more, doing too much work, losing quality and control. He hardly rotates about his elbow, using it more as a forward momentum generator. As a consequence, James' shot is more of a drive than a topspin shot. Compare this with Fan, whose wrist action is more oriented to spin generation than controlling the ball, and adds extra spin momentum to the spin already generated by the elbow rotation. Of course, James' shots are very effective and have much higher quality than mine :)
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 7 жыл бұрын
Well of course, anyone compared to Fan Zhendong is likely to come up short. Fan Zhendong probably plays this shot better than anyone else in the world at the moment. So if you want to look at perfect technique, Fan Zhendong is a good place to start! But I disagree on a couple of things you say about James's shot. Maybe it doesn't come across on the video, but James does get lots of spin on his backhand (I know, as I have a faced it many times!). It's quite deceptive - because the stroke is short, you don't expect much to be on it, but it really zips over the net and kicks off the table. I struggle to control the spin he generates. And he doesn't lose much control with the way he plays this shot. It is highly consistent. Certainly at local league level, he is able able to control rallies with his backhand topspins, putting opponents under pressure and forcing them to mess up or play weak shots, where he can finish the point.
@knotwilg3596
@knotwilg3596 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering. Of course I can't judge the amount of spin that is on James' ball. But your technique when demoing is very similar to what I see Fan Zhendong do in the referred video, while James' is very different. If James generates lots of spin, despite the apparent wrong elbow position and reduced impact of that rotation axis, I would guess it is due to his brushing the ball towards the edge of his bat, increasing momentum again. Thx!
@Hin-yi6gw
@Hin-yi6gw 6 жыл бұрын
What you have said are totally correct, but remember, this is a tutorial video for beginnings. It is really difficult to learn by imitating the top players as a beginner. Just like on the video you linked above, the coach said when Fan change the direction he only opened his wrist, brush the side of the ball while the body remains facing the same direction, but when he teaches the young players he told them to move their body angle to help out as they do not have enough ability to do what Fan does yet. Besides that, to do a perfect stroke you need to use you feet, waist, arm, wrist etc. all at the same time, and you really cannot expect a beginner to be able to do that, this video is mostly for developing the feeling of doing a backhand topspin. Although the form is not as perfect as you mentioned, what Tom has shown is totally enough for beginners.
@knotwilg3596
@knotwilg3596 6 жыл бұрын
What Tom shows is indeed absolutely correct and spot on for beginners. My criticism was not at all directed at Tom's demonstration of the technique.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. I coach a lot of beginner players, and you have to keep things very simple to begin with. I want them to achieve high consistency with the shots they play. This usually means playing slower, with simpler strokes. As they improve and have to think less about the basic technique, then I start to work on generating more speed and spin.

You explain showing a very close bat. Your partner, on the other hand, uses a very open bat. You show a top spin. Your partner uses more likely a short drive using just a hand. At least it is an impession I got especiallly in slow motion.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 6 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point, although there is still plenty if topspin on James' shots. I think you have a choice when using this technique. You could close the bat angle for more topspin or open up a bit more for a flatter contact.
