Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) was written by Christopher Cross, Burt Bacharach and others for the 1981 movie Arthur starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli. Once released, this song sat at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. In this lesson you have some options - either sit with the chords and shapes and come up with your own suitable accompaniment pattern or learn it nearly exactly as it was played on the record. At first glance this might look like a tough one to learn, but if you spend some time with this lesson you'll find that not only are there really only two four-measure progressions that loop, but a lot of the material is very pattern based and repetitive. Whether you want to just learn the basics or recreate the piano part as it was recorded, you're in the right place. Enjoy!

PLEASE EXCUSE ME SHOUTING OUT LOUD. This song is one of my most favourite musical scores of all time . I saw heard it when I saw the film in 81. Your tutorial has to be the best ever . You have put the most amazing smile on my face . Not that I can play it but you have made it so much easier to follow. I am trying to teach myself piano fir the past 15 years and just now am getting somewhere. By now I should be a lot better . Lesson you need help to learn . THANK YOU SO MUCH

Thank you sir, I was fortunately gifted an Otto Altenburg baby grand piano gifted by a retired music teacher and delivered by Otto's great grandson. I am in love with Glen Gould's works, especially the Bach renditions. And I appreciate your dedication and are eager to learn beyond belief the many works composed upon this earth, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner, Ravel, Vivaldi, Mozart, Handel, Hayden, etc......my goodness the list is infinite, including my favorite movie Arthur and the many works of Burt Bacharach. I love your videos, but it was Burt Bacharach who wrote the piano music for Arthur’s Theme, and co-writer Chris Cross contributed lyrics and of course, sang it.

When I am trying to do an accurate cover I usually put 90% of my effort into nailing the intro, and in this case it's almost a perfect copy. Just about the only thing I spotted was at about the 21 second mark where this version inserts an A chord (2nd invn) on beat 1; to my ear the way this is omitted in the original is unexpected, effective, and adds character

The verse's key is a little ambiguous (it sort of implies D minor or C major), but the Chorus is more clearly in the key of A major.

@@HDpiano memorizing the chords, Dmin, G, C, F, D min, E, A is a lot easier than trying to learn all those notes one at a time. Everything just falls into place once you know them.

The crediting is wrong. The melody to Arthurs theme, as opposed to the entire song, was written by just Burt Bacharach.
