It would be very helpful to have some concept of the goal of the game and why things are being done rather than strictly focusing on the steps out of context.

what on earth is the point of a church card that lowers your die value? is it just a hindrance to the players?

it is to hinder other players final score, after all you are trying to end the game with the most valuable dice. If i notice another player going after the red die (for example), I will try to lower its value so that my die is of higher value (assuming I manage to win the die)
