Since it's almost Valentine's Day, I thought about all you love birds out there. "Let's show everyone".......How To Play Bolero on Bongos. This style of music is played in Cuba, Spain, Puerto Rico and other countries. Bolero is a genre that can project all kinds of emotions and tends to be one to talk about love and sorrow at times. This genre uses the bongo rhythm named "Martillo". But in this context, I play with a 'slight' variation that sounds like the "Maraca" instrument pattern played in the Bolero style. The Bongo sound beautiful man! Especially with the Fiberskyn on the macho and the rawhide on the hembra. Reminds me of an old pair of fiberglass Matador bongo we had in college with the same exact head selection. Anyway, Look forward to more of your videos. They are all great, but, the one you did on Jorge “el nino” (God rest his soul) where you broke down “Anunga Nunga” was an especially tricky but very unique, cool choice. Would you ever consider doing another Irakere tutorial on say “Gira Gira”?.

@@RomanPercussion Yeah, definitely check it out when you get a chance. There are a few Irakere tunes where he is playing the same type of pattern/tumbao. What’s really cool is how Eliel Lazo(a devoted student of his from what I understand) uses the same type of pattern quite a bit. I could only describe it as sounding sort of like a Songo drum set groove with a folkloric “ride” pattern inflection(HTTH HTTH). Anyway, best regards….

many of the cuban school say is not good to do the 'roll' on beat 2. Couse it should be the work of the timbalero cascara and not the bongocero or anyone else.... What do you think personally? ciao

Hey Manuel, thanks for your comment! I agree partially with what is said. In the context for this video, it’s meant to be played with the “maraca” or cascara part. However, in a band setting with timbales, I would play mainly play a straight martillo with some repiques here and there. I think a percussionist should play what the music calls for. Tasteful is better in my opinion. But I do agree, that the maraca/cáscara pattern is mainly for the timbalero if there is one.
