Thank you for the great video! As a middle and high school band director, I really appreciate you discussing the underlying fundamentals of your articulations, slurs, etc. Demonstrating the various types of triple tonguing is definitely helpful and I like your term of calling articulations more or less percussive.

Ben - great lesson on maximizing the value of our time in Clarke. Thanks for sharing your approach - and it’s also encouraging to know that even the finest players may find occasional glitches needing work. Working on fundamentals always catches my weaknesses!

To be clear, this is probably “a” way to practice Clarke’s but I think we need to defer to Claude Gordon for “the” way to practice Clarke’s. Gordon studied with Clarke so his interpretation is probably more valid. Having said that, thanks for giving us another way think about it. This was intended as more of a “people need to know what Gordon said about this” rather than any kind of criticism. This guy plays great.

I agree, this is definitely a differentiation in he way I was taught Clarke and you as well I'm sure. He plays his butt off, and he's focused. I did all the variations on the Bb.

Hello, I practice Clarke 1-5 everyday and my teacher has told me to play them very quiet. You were demonstrating this at a mf comfortable full tone. Any reason I should or shouldn’t practice one or the other?

I would assume your teacher wants you to really connect while using your air. These exercises are originally supposed to be played at a soft dynamic but Playing them at Mf isn’t bad at all it still helps. If your teacher says to go soft then go soft. But of course no dynamic is wrong as long as you are squeezing as much value out of these exercises. Hope that helps

Keep in mind why Clarke specifies "quiet." It is less tiring to play soft.

You talk about "maximum capable speed." I can play in F major faster than I can play in F# major. Should I practice each key at maximum capable speed (F faster than F#), or should I do the entire exercise at the maximum capable speed of my slowest key (F only at the fastest speed I can capably play F#)?

Very informative. Would like to hear more instruction like this on other playing, for example how to articulate and how to get a nice ping. What does this look like?
