Episode of the "Work Smarter, Not Harder" series with Justin Ball.
Finding Your Drag Base
In this video, I speak briefly about how I approach playing drags on concert snare drum, how to give them a rhythmic base to be more consistent, and how the context of performance informs my choices from one musical situation to another. The advantage of an approach like this is if I find myself in an orchestral or chamber situation in which I need to play drags a little more open or closed, I have a rhythmic basis from which to draw upon. I end by posing my thoughts on how drags can be used musically, the philosophy associated with solo music literature and personal choice, and how this applies to drags in a rudimental context.
