I've dabbled in other cyberpunk RPGs over the years; cyberspace by i.c.e. and shadowrun, but cyberpunk 2020 is what I've been looking for. When I saw the trailer for 2077 and heard it was based off 2020 I looked it up and was immediately obsessed. I know have PDFs of most of the books, and am taking my time learning how to play until I can find players, or a game to join.

This was a great video. Explains a bit more on things my groups has missed over the decades. For instance, our group assumed the skill modifier was only used for IPs not to be applied during initial creation. Also, for starting money, we'd divide a d6 by 3, but didn't round off. So you could start with 1/3 your salary or 1 2/3 your salary.

You could run with no modifier as a house rule if you feel it is more fair, certainly, but it should apply across the board otherwise.

That's what I said, since the Difficulty or Improvement Point Multiplier was not mentioned in the Skills chapter about character generation, Career Skills and Pickup Skills. The little numbers in brackets were not printed next to those skills on the Character Sheet, the Career Skills list or the Master Skill list which was offered to be copied as a character generation worksheet! I took it as my licence not to bother with it, in initial chargen.
@d.c.morgenstern1519

It's not even actually a house rule to skip the multiplier in character creation. In every single mention of the multiplier in the book, it refers specifically to Improvement Points. Characters aren't created with IP, and nowhere does it say to multiply your character creation skill points in any way. You can check the book yourself just as I did to verify this. I am under the impression that the game's original writers never intended a multiplier for character creation, regardless of what people at the company currently do when playing the game. On a personal level, not a single group I played with in the early 90s ever used multipliers in character creation. Additionally, while it seems to give people an advantage in the long term, it also means that the people who focus too much on starting with difficult skills are focusing less on the easier but more broadly useful skills that everyone else would be getting. They have to play catch-up after character creation, if they can make it long enough without the skills they skipped.

Mike Pondsmith also GM'd a game of Red at Gary Con this year, but they start with the characters already created in the videos I saw (sounds like they lost a session recording).

12:25 "...four points in Basic Tech to get two ranks, because it's one of those skills that cost more to get ranks..." Difficulty multipliers (p. 46), later called IP Multipliers (p. 53), is a multiplier that doubles or triples the number of points needed to learn the next level of skill. However, I'm not sure it applies to buying skills in _initial_ character generation, since it's not brought up there where the Career Skills are listed for each role. For example, Basic Tech (IP Multiplier of 2) is part of the Nomad Career Skill list. All these skills are tied to either REF or TECH stats. But the little numbers in parentheses were NOT printed on the character sheets, NOT on the Career Skills list p. 44, NOT on the Master Skill List p. 45 which is suggested to be copied as a character generation worksheet. I took that as my licence not to worry about it in initial character generation! But the multiplier is an important factor in the difficulty of learning new languages from wildly different language families, I'll give you that! Maybe in character generation people have optimum learning environments from their backgrounds before living on the streets and gaining IP through experience. That's how I would play, so load up on IP Multiplier skills in initial character generation! Also check out the Occupation Table on p. 58. Your starting funds, and regular salary if any, are tied to the Level of your Special Ability. Characters with Special Ability 1-5 are all the same salary, but salary goes up with Special Ability level 6 or more! It pays to stick a 6 or 7 in Special Ability, without hurting your other Career Skills too much.
@d.c.morgenstern1519
@d.c.morgenstern1519 5 жыл бұрын
Every mention of the multiplier in the text in the book specifically also says that it's connected to IP expenditures. I'm convinced that it was originally intended that way. No multipliers in character creation, since that doesn't use IP. Also, since each rank in any skill costs more IP as you improve, but not more points in chargen, using the multiplier in chargen doesn't quite work out well mathematically anyway. You do skip out on some other important skills by spending too much on those with IP multipliers though, which may impact your survivability. ;)

Great series, really helpful! I noticed you arent' counting the cost of the surgical operations for the base modules of cyberware (e.g. in 16:09 you are taking basic neuralware for 1000 eddies without the 500 eddies for minor surgical operations, and in 16:40 a basic eye module for 500 eddies without 1500 eddies for major surgical operations). Are these counted off for basic modules or there is something I'm missing?
@RTalsorianGames
@RTalsorianGames 5 жыл бұрын
You're not missing it. We didn't include surgery costs in this video. We feel that's a GM decision. In this case, the GM didn't include it so as not to make cyberware impossible to get without going in hock to an organization. If a GM wants to encourage that path or restrict cyberware, surgery costs should be included.

Now if anyone would actually make a character like that. Instead, they just plunk 10 points into Medtech immedately, even though their background in no way justifies them being a world class surgeon, fill in a few points here and there, and then plunk 10 points in a combat skill with their pickups. Now they have 15-30k for gear, and they come out cyber'ed up like Robocop, packing the equivalent firepower to a small third-world country. A skin weave and light armor jacket later, they have a 26SP on their chest and arms, a 12 everywhere else, and combat skills that rival specialists. They can ignore enemies that aren't packing assault rifles, and the only challenge you can throw are heavily armed corporate mercs. Yeah....I am annoyed with my players....

Is this a new rule? I thought that the number in peranthesis is the improvement point cost. And starting characters skill point cost is 1 for 1 not 1 for 1xmultiplier (basic tech (2) so it cost 2 skill points for 1 rank)

@@Itsdag78 From what it actually says in the book, you're completely correct. Every mention of a multiplier for skills explicitly connects them with improvement points only. GMs are free to house rule the multiplier onto the skill points from character creation, but nowhere in the book does it say to do so. I sincerely believe that's as the original writers intended it, especially since initial skills don't increase in cost as you spend more of your starting points on them. In the tasks and skills section, some skills, like martial arts, will have a "(number)" next to the name. I think I've only seen it on martial arts, languages, and some specialist tech skills.
@Dracopol
@Dracopol 5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to worry about it in your initial skill picks, but to improve your skills you collect Improvement Points with various means and note them next to each individual skill on your sheet. To improve a skill level takes 10x your current skill level in IP to level up to the next skill level. However, p.46 refers to Difficulty Modifier next to the name of a skill in the descriptions, this appears to be the same as Improvement Point Multiplier on p. 53. I found I had to put the IP Multiplier for the affected skills in parentheses on the character sheet as a reminder. It is advantageous to buy them as high up as you can in your initial skill picks when the multiplier is not a factor, without neglecting your other needed career skills.
@Itsdag78
@Itsdag78 5 жыл бұрын
But in the video basic tech cost 2 skill points per rank because of the modifier. I can’t find that rule in my book. In the book it is explained as a improvement point multiplier not at character creation
@Dracopol
@Dracopol 5 жыл бұрын
@@Itsdag78 Yeah, that's what fooled me...all along my GM career. I thought there was not a mention of it in the starting section on picking skills up to p. 46, the little numbers in parentheses next to those skills was not printed on the character sheet, the Career Skills List or the Master Skills List intended as a work-sheet. What was a boy to think? You might justify not paying IP Multipliers in initial character generation because characters had backgrounds which allowed formal training with the very best in audio-visual learning methods, and IP is mainly gained through experience on the streets from then on. Skill chips don't have the multiplier, that's another way to get a low-level tech skill or other skill. "I know Kung-Fu!" --Neo
@d.c.morgenstern1519
@d.c.morgenstern1519 5 жыл бұрын
In the skills section of the book there's a number noted next to skills that have a multiplier. However, in the text that explains what the multiplier is for, it only specifies that it applies to Improvement Points without ever applying it to the very different points used in character creation. (very different in that IP costs increase as your skill improves in ranks, but character creation points don't) It's reasonable to assume that the multiplier therefore was originally never intended (nearly 30 years ago) for character creation, though people at the publisher today assume otherwise. It's never explicitly said in the book either way.
