In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Don’t Look Back by the band Boston. This was the title track off their second album and is an amazing composition that clocks in at just under 6 minutes. Tom Scholz takes us on a musical journey with a lot of twists and turns as well as interesting and beautiful guitar parrts. I break down all the parts of this song including some suggestions and tips for the harmony guitar parts. I also provide incite on performance tips and the music theory behind this composition. I hope you enjoy the lesson. Please subscribe!

This was always one of my favorites. Bought the album right when it came out. I was 13 years old! Tom was brilliant... but Barry's expressive and exciting leads are underappreciated. Thanks for giving him proper credit!!

I love the story behind the making of Boston, starting in a basement with Tom Scholz. There is a documentary of his story out in a KZfaq video. There is also a video where he goes back and visits the home where it all started, which is now owned by someone else. I liked the Boston guitar so much, I bought the SR&D Tom Scholz X100 Rockman back in the early 80’s, that I still own today and it still sounds great. Tom’s a genius. Great video Marty. 🤘🏼🎸👍

@@vayabroder729 Right, that Marshall sound was integral to a lot of bands, but also Boston. I"m not even sure what they were using back then. I know if I try to play it here at home, I just use my guitar processor, a Zoom, and set my Vox modeling amp to a solid Marshall sounding channel, and turn the gain up a good way.

And right off the bat you're playing the rhythm guitar part wrong. It is not the same thing over and over - it alternates. The beginning of the frame is the same, but where you have 777 - XXXX - XXXX - 999 -10,9,11 - 999, every second frame is 777 - XXXX - XXXX - 777 - 777 - 999 and then of course, it changes going into the chorus. The only video I've been able to find of anyone playing the rhythm correctly other than myself and the actual song (if you listen very closely) is a channel called TruthSurge the actual video is kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gp9pg8J6ypjHops.htmlsi=vNryCJhp-_TEfcUz he cuts into the lead part in the intro but you can clearly hear him playing the alternating (correct) rhythm after that. You're welcome lol!

Thanks for the comment man! All do respect, the way I play this works just fine and is very accurate. Much of guitar is open to interpretation and personal style. Out of morhid curiosity, when I get comments like this I always have to ask why would you watch if you knew how to play it so perfectly? Or is it an inner need to correct people. I'm not being snarky, I'm just genuinely interested. lol. I do appreciate you passion and obvious love for Boston. But after playing this song for decades I I don't think I can or will change my methods. It's too ingrained.
