Everyone saing this game is determened from start - up to 1:44 (pretty late game) Alice could have easy won 6:3 squares. Let me show you how - when makig her 3 points "snake" make just the 1st square and then directly draw the vertical line ending her turn - it will leave the 2 points for Bob but then he will be forced to give away the 5 point snake - infact this strategy works for every snake longer than 2. And yes - it was really fun time at school beating every opponent :D :D :D

This is one of the "advanced" strategies for winning. It is covered in Elwyn Berlekamp's book "The Dots and Boxes Game: Sophisticated Child's Play", which I would highly recommend if you can get hold of it. Elwyn sadly passed away last year, but he was a brilliant mathematician in his own right as well as working with many very gifted people including the famous John Conway (who also sadly died this year after contracting Covid-19). Apart from anything else their books on game theory are quite legendary.

The Trxilt game takes Dots and Boxes in a completely new direction: Dots are connected with lines. Game pieces are activated! Game pieces are worth 1 to 9 points. Points are scored when an active piece is used to capture another active piece(s). When each player has created 30 lines or when there are no more scoring opportunities the game ends. The player with the most points wins. Trxilt can be played five different ways!

right.... I read that you can not ignore completing a square if available, is that right?

If you complete a square you have to have another go, but you don't have to to complete a square if available. Usually you would (because otherwise you would just be giving more squares to your opponent), but sometimes not completing a square forces the other player to make a move that they wouldn't want to.
