Here is an amazing and SUPER easy song to play - it's basically just two chords. Join me to learn the left and right hand patterns for this absolute classic - We do a slow speed playalong - and then it's full steam ahead together as we do a concert speed playalong. And...let's venture into a little bit of lead guitar with two VERY important scale shapes that will serve you well for many things to come.
Songsheets are always available at / guitaratwork
I'll put the Beatbuddy on and also show you how I'm using an amazing loop pedal to jam along with. Tons of fun! I am using an electric guitar but you are TOTALLY fine on your acoustic guitar for this one. Let's have fun with it! Let me know how it's all coming together - Cheers! Shane

I remember playing this in my band. All the members didn't want to do it because of the eerie sounding guitar part. We didn't have any guitar effect pedals. I showed them I could do it without one. All a did was turn my guitar volume all the way down, tap a note, then raise the knob. Did the same for every note. They were amazed. So much, we kept it in our play list.

Shane, great lesson a song most of us have played, but you broke down and gave us a strumming pattern that will make us all sound better. Wasn’t expecting lead guitar and lesson on scales. Helped take some of the mystery out of them for me. Then you put together with BeatBuddy, Looper and little improvisation ….fantastic. You keep us all playing man. . Thank you.

@@GuitarAtWork Hi Shane… you’re right she is fabulous!! We saw the Tele in a local music shop online and decided to see if it was still there… it was so now it’s ours! It’s a 1989 MIJ ‘62 reissue custom tele in sparkle red and rosewood fingerboard… they are both gorgeous!! Yes, I ordered the cable as well…you mentioned it in the video and it was easy to find on their site. The shipping cost wasn’t too bad either… really looking forward to them arriving. I’m an acoustic player really, sort of intermediate but much more a beginner electric player and the tele is such a nice guitar it makes me want to play! I subscribed to your channel as I really like the way you start off in small increments but quickly include teaching for slightly more advanced players. That’s a brilliant mix! Thank you for that - they're not actually chords.....they are octaves. I start out on the 9th fret G string and the 12th fret high E string......that shape just moves around. Hope that helps you. It is a great way to add 'weight' to lead ideas. Cheers, Shane

Thank you! This just made me one giant step closer to understanding modes. Because...It made me ask myself if the song's two chords are basically F Maj and G Maj, then why does a C Maj scale fit? So if you count up 4 scale degrees from C Maj...C, D, E, F. There! F! Your in F Lydian. So play a C Maj (same as Am) scale, use your ear for what notes to highlight over the F and G chords. The parent scale of F Lydian is C Maj. Acronym: I Ionian 1(C) Don't Dorian 2 (D) Practice Phrygian 3 (E) Learning Lydian 4 (F) Modes Mixolydian 5 (G) A Aeolian (Minor) 6 (A) Lot Locrian 7 (B) They're all the same parent (shape), The C major scale By George! I think I'm starting to grasp music theory. This was an "A Ha" moment.

Shane, great example of how this song can be played. You made me want to start working on scales again! Just wondering how you have your electric plugged into the Aeros? Is just going to the Aeros or you going through something else first? Thanks is advance.

Thanks Ron - I’m using an AX8 amp modeller/effects processor and going straight out of that into the Aeros. Cheers, Shane

Love your cover of this, Shane, and all your lessons! I was looking to get the tabs for this on your patreon but was unsure if the tabs will include ALL the notes for the lead/melody you do at the beginning of this video since you don’t review those during the rest of the video. Can you clarify what the tabs include please?
@GuitarAtWork
@GuitarAtWork Жыл бұрын
Thank you Annie, the Tab includes the song and scales used in the lead - not the exact lead I played which is improvised. It will enable you to play your own leads. Cheers, Shane

Hi Shane, me again. As I listen I’m finding that along with the BeatBuddys rhythms and the looper playing back accompaniment, what also sounds great is the tone you have going on, the echo ( chorus? delay? reverb?) gives it a bit of a haunting sound. Would you consider at some point doing a video on various tones and some suggestions on how to achieve them and if by pedals, where to put them in your stack. I can do some effects on my Fender Mustang and older Fender G-Dec modeling amps but my question today is, do I want to “model” the rhythm? Should I set the BeatBuddy up on it own clean amp but then how do I get that into the looper and have them playing on the same beat? Might just need to play around with my looper, an Nux Loop core which is basically a Boss RC-3 clone, but any hints or such would be great. Like I say, might be a idea for maybe a couple of videos. Thanks again. Wally

Hey Shane, great to learn a bit about improvising... always thought it was beyond me! My question is: how do you know that C Pentatonic Major is the scale to use for this song?
@GuitarAtWork
@GuitarAtWork 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim - that's a great question. The song is basically going IV to V over and over again in the key of C. C pentatonic major is a good 'global' scale for that progression. You could also use F pentatonic major or G pentatonic major but then things get a bit more 'chord specific' rather than a 'global' approach like C Pentatonic major. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, Shane

@@GuitarAtWork that's why I said I'm getting better. Being old and crippled up is hard getting everything working together. Like rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time. I'm still working on walking, I don't think I'll get the chewing gum part of that anytime soon. It's just time and effort, and I know I need to put more time in. Take care Shane.
