he sounds airy because he is sub-toning to prevent sounding too loud. the mic they use is designed probably for a small room and with his clarinet setup and the amount of air he has prepared to put through that instrument, it would distort horribly because of so much sound.

Good reminder here. Slow, deliberate practice is much more valuable than speedy practice. I'm dealing with finding home and comfortable placement of fingers again, after semi-successful carpal tunnel surgery. More important now to feel whatever my fingers can feel to seat properly on each tone hole. Saxophone is a different story, since the pads do the hole covering for you. Thanks BMS and ED.

So true! In short, practice slowly and conscientiously to establish muscle memory. But there's more, definitely worth a listen.

I've been playing for over twenty years and much of what Eddie is saying I already know but I've found this video incredibly useful and I'm incorporating it in my practice sessions with great results. Thank you Eddie.

He's a very good teacher. His basics of "landing", starting with playing one note, etc.....he reminds me of my first band director, who claimed that your best technique comes from "teaching your brain....which controls your fingers and the muscles in your face" how to play a note exactly right. That's a tough lesson for young kids to latch on to and believe, but it's so true.

Eddie’s breath control and embouchure were so good on the clarinet that even in the fast passages you could hear the individual finger landings. Sort of a Kenny G effect only on the clarinet.

Great lesson. By practicing slowly, you actually improve at a faster rate thus allowing you to play faster sooner! YAY!

Eddie, I started playing faster when I started playing my long tones for about 1 hour a day. After about 3 weeks I noticed that my hands felt really comfortable on the keys and my playing improved tremendously ! and faster. Tenor Sax.

Eddie explains it very well. His sound is similar to that of northern Germany " s clarinet-man Martin Schmidt-Hahn. This man is performing on a clarinet with a german system, as u can see on his videos. Incredible !!

Some interesting points.... I like the way Eddie changes our perspective on clarinet technique, for his comments echo what many commercial pilots maintain - the "landing' is always much more difficult than taking that initial inspirational leap into space - let those fingers "fly"....

This is wonderful, extremely good advice. It makes terrific sense from everything that we know (certainly that even I know), from how the brain learns, from what the neuroscience of learning tells us. So to get those neurons firing with exquisite precision, while playing really fast, you need to practice, and practice and then practice some more playing beautiful sounding notes, very slowly. Then after much practice the ability to play those notes accurately comes easily. Eddie Daniels is not a only a World Class Performer, but a Terrific Teacher. These two talents do not usually go together. So much THANKS for both making great music and giving great advice ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Excellent, and sounds like such a nice person also. I must say I loved his first albums .... way back when. Most of the tunes on tenor, a few on flute and maybe one on clarinet. He was (is) such an underrated tenor player.

I find that playing relaxed also helps. When I try to play fast, the sound is garbled and I don't hit all my notes. By if I loosen up, and instead try to play the piece without pushing myself I can play it just fine

You can also say that you move your fingers always at the same speed the movements are just closer or futher from each other.

Hello Eddie, thank’s to,remind us the basic truths about playing with agility. I would add some useful tips. Don’t lift your’fingers too much and avoid contracting your fingers. But the basic tip is : slow down, down and down and increase very progressivly your speed and the speed will come naturally !

I think the 70's jazz guy (Eddie Daniels??) plays in my community band clarinet section. He is pretty good but didn't make the 1st clarinet section. His real name is Chris Lepsmakker.

My only concern with the video is that there's a lot of focus on the "going home" concept but little in the way of actual technical training from this video for a rookie or novice unless you watch closely. Part of the video should discuss finger placement, in particular how high a finger might lift. I may be getting too technical, but there's no denying that some of the high lifting might cause new players to raise fingers way too high and effect them long term. Best to catch that early.
