This is a tutorial on the jazz progression ii-V-I on the ukulele. We'll use it to learn "Sunday Morning" by Maroon 5.

Thanks Brian you rock man!! I’m in the Bay too, do you do zoom lessons? I need some help practicing figure picking I’m not very good at it ,but really want to get good. Who knows maybe one day you can do in person lessons again but for now... zoom is good for me, if you do and have time.

thanks Brian. Ever since you posted (a while ago) how to play major7 and minor7 chords with all the different roots on the different strings, I have been obsessed. I have been playing Coltrane Changes, Bird Changes, and Rhythm Changes (which is essentially ii-V-I with a few substitutions). I have a custom uke with 19 frets and I've been playing up and down the neck. My only problem is that I don't have any discretion. Instead of keeping all the chords together in the same region of the fretboard, I try to make all around the neck. Or I like to move chromatically with each chord of the ii-V-I either increasing or decreasing in pitch. At some point, I have to wonder when is it too much? Is there any way or do you have any advice on how to curb musical enthusiasm so that it doesn't become unmusical?

Glad to hear that you're exploring jazz chords on the uke. I recommend figuring out 1-3-5-7 voicing of min7, dom7, and maj7 chords, and look for ways to move from one chord to another with as few finger movements as possible. For example, you can get from a Dm7 to a G7 by just moving the C down a half step to B, and the A down a whole step to G. The other two notes (D & F) stay the same. Good luck & have fun!
