Here's a method of creating interest in your comping parts without having to rely on chord scales and 6th diminished ideas. Let's discuss!
By adding the interval of a diatonic 2nd below each degree of a chord we create tension in the harmony. By resolving this tension downwards it creates a very satisfying sense of movement within our comping part. By combining this approach with other comping ideas, such as moving diads through the scale and splitting familiar chords by frequency, we begin to form some interest character to our comping phrases.
