learn a progression like that up the neck with CAGED chords in every position. Then do it around the circle of fifths. Learn voicings on the high and low strings. I did it for a couple months with vi-IV-I-V and now I can just find any chord I want somewhere close to where my hand is, helped my playing so much.

The base pattern chosen for the top 3 strings was an interesting choice - got me thinking more about musical modes and how we don't actually need to resolve our licks to the actual key itself. In the case of this video, while the notes themselves match the key of D Major, the scale pattern starts and stops on the 5th degree of said scale, so we're actually hearing an A Mixolydian scale played over the top of a D Major chord progression - very cool stuff. Makes me want to explore the nearby pattern of playing the G Lydian scale over the top of the same chord progression :).

This finally made sense for me, thank you for putting your tabs up in the video the way you do.

A very good example of what you are trying to get across is "Canon in D" which plays basically a D major scale throughout all of the changes (including your progression's chords) but adding an F#m of course only changing the beginning or root note . Nicely done without sounding condescending to the newer players.

Being a very low level intermediate guitar player, I had tried and quickly given up on finger style, it simply mystified me. I've watched 20 of your videos, you have lifted the covers up and now I see how it's done.

Today must be my lucky day. I've seen hundreds, if not thousands, of guitar videos, some OK and most of them not good at all (for me). This one really is the kind of stuff I've been looking for. Thank you very much!

As a teacher myself I can say that you are a great engaging teacher, I learnt a lot from this as it is highly adaptive. One thing I found while playing with the connecting riffs was by making the last note of the riff the root note of the next chord meant I finished the riff on the chord which added flow to the rhythm. Not gonna lie I have been stuck with playing the same scales noodling not knowing what to do thinking I had to play all of these fast licks. I have been so discouraged as I thought I wasn’t progressing. But watching this video finding out I could use the same scale seven notes over all four chords made something click for me. I no longer have to run through every scale I know with every chord change. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Sometimes the same thing can be explained a thousand times and only the time you didn't expect that it finally starts making sense! I always wondered how to connect chords and individual notes, how it looks so seamless and effortless on others. Watched loads of videos on individual mechanical cogs that make it happen, but never found the right voice that connected the dots. Perhaps that is a testament to the growth of my ability too that has helped with the understanding, but there's no doubt about it - you are a great teacher!

This was really a light bulb moment video.. I’m going to work on this. My playing is boom chuck ie alt base chuck. This really explains a lot I never”got”. I was clueless when my turn to solo. Now I have a a clear idea of the mechanics. The next hurdle will be trying to sort out the timing. Lots of eight and sixteenth notes to figure out.

What I find useful sometimes is to strum a chord then pluck little phrases of that same chord before progressing to the next one.

After spending hours drilling on the 5 major pentatonic scale positions, their major scales, and then the 7 modes and wondering “wtf am I supposed to do with this crap?” Someone finally puts it into perspective and helps fill in the gaps. I can see we’re playing a D major scale within the F# Phrygian shape. I can see we are in the 3rd position major pentatonic pattern. All of this knowledge is worthless if I just start playing random notes super fast, but not understanding the phrasing and rhythm. I struggled with this gap for so long and finally, someone lays out a 5 step approach in a 16 minute video, lol. I’ve spent 2 hours going through the material in this video and am only on step 3. I know from all my hours and hours of drills what scales/mode shapes I could play, but I don’t know what notes I should play. Thanks for helping me figure this out!!!

This is exactly my way of playing. To alternate plain chords + licks between them + riff and then come back to the plain chords.

Watch several times and read all the replies. The licks are really nice. The notes you chose seems random but actually follow the scale, pentatonic, chord progression rules. This clips gives the beginners some hints.but after learn these it will be ok.

I think it is about the harmonic order of balance between chords and tune. Notes create melody chords create rhythm so there has to be a balance between melody and rhythm.
