Andy is like the Harvard, Yale, Princeton professor of rock/blues guitar. He was the first and the best to break down what all the greats where doing. And if you've ever seen him you know he's pretty damn great himself.

I was just dreaming of learning this and through the power of Guitar World and Andy Aledort (fav instructor) here it is. Great lesson as usual. More Magic Sam Otis Rush and Chicago Blues!

Been trying to get this down for a while now. It's not easy. A lot of dynamics. The magic sam video on KZfaq of him doing this is so awesome.

I used to have a dvd with a bunch of lessons with Andy on it and I always thought he looked like he really didn’t want to be doing what he was doing 😅. I know that’s not true, just going by how he describes what he’s going to be doing, it’s just the way he looks/talks. Also like most guitarists he probably likes to play more than talk haha😂.

Re: the tone, I'm on the bridge pickup as you can see, and I just have a moderately distorted tone (mighta been a Tube Screamer) and a touch of delay (Carbon Copy). Sam's tone on this is heavily overdriven--sounds like his amp is on 10 or close to it, plus he had humbuckers--on Earl Hooker's borrowed Univox Les Paul! This one definitely needs some gnarly ass grind to it...
@siddells8 жыл бұрын
+Andy Aledort Cheers - it almost sounds twangy or swampy. A quirk of a tone - I love it.

Rt on Shaun--you gotta get some gnarly-ness in there for the Magic Sam stuff...

I heard he uses no pedals but simply turns everything all the way up on his amp

Just want to say thanks for the fantastic tablature work you have done, it's really so eerily accurate, without it I wouldn't be half the guitar player I am. Cheers!

Makes sense when you think magic sam got his start doing country style guitar before he moved to Chicago. He bluesified the F$%K out of it.

Kind of reminds me of a 9 Ball break where all Hell breaks loose and all the money balls are potted and you feel like all the money in the world is in your back pocket and you got a chance with anyone, anywhere, however you want it.
@jamesnorwood40843 жыл бұрын
Sam and Rush both were excellent singers, devised memorable tunes and really the guitar was the sauce. Without their distinctive voices though it just wouldn't be the same. Makes an eloquent argument to just be yourself. No two are the same; each person is unique as God made them and imitation at best is imperfect.

This is usually know as "Lookin' Good," there's a great live version in B&W on KZfaq, where Sam is playing Earl Hooker's gittar. There are some differences, but it's impossible for me to get without all the online tutorials, so I'm not complaining. But if you're learning this, check the original.
@DonDeering7 жыл бұрын
The one I mentioned was 1969, the American Folk Blues Festival in Europe, Sam's playing Earl Hooker's guitar. There's an alternate studio version on Delmark's Legacy, and live versions on Rockin' Wild in Chicago (February 1964), and Raw Blues (Berkeley, CA, July 11, 1969). There may be more, those are the ones I know. I know Bobby Radcliff's version, have heard him do it live a couple times. There's also a video of him doing a slow walk through on messiahsez's KZfaq channel. Magic Sam died on December 1, 1969.

Play Magic Sam's Boogie And Tell You That That Is How To Play It."
