I've got three students starting soon and these videos are full of good answers to questions I've heard before and maybe bullshit my answers. But I am wondering. Which video should I start with to hear Paul sound like Paul? I like your playing.

The bass its an extremely versatile instrument, you won't normally use a bass as he does because you have a guitar that can do the job well, but a guitar can't do the ''original bass job'', so you normally use a bass in the rythm section, not the melodic one, but its not some kind of a ''must do'' statement. He played bass, but just on a diffent way that we normally are used to hear it, that Motorhead sound it's because the main riff is done whit a bass, not a guitar

Tip number 11. Make mistakes in every song. If you isolate Lemmy's bassline you often hear a lot of small mistakes and omissions. It almost sounds like something from a drunken jam session rather than a final recording. It's one of the things that adds to the over-all feeling and hellraiser attitude of the tracks.

Jimi Hendrix also made some small mistakes in his songs as well (fittingly enough Lemmy was his roadie for a while), but the really cool thing about them is that they can make the mistakes still work out in their favor for the song as a whole. Makes them quite unique in an industry that practically demands near-perfection at bare minimum It really says something that these two who are regarded as some of the greatest guitarists & bassists ever weren't afraid to own up to the little flubs they made on the fretboard

Probably cared more that it felt right instead of being technically right. Plus using that much distortion it's so difficult to even make out any mistakes unless you isolated the track.

Lemmy inspired me to play bass, I bought a cheap semi beat up Ibanez 240 at a flea market and practiced by following the ace of spades album and several Ramones albums. I tried learning to play with my fingers first but I was born with tremors in my arms and hands so it didn’t work, but I overcame that and began down picking like Deedee Ramone. It’s been 3.5 years since I bought my old bass and I have gotten to an amateur status, I will never say I’m a good bass player or even an expert if se people consider me that I’ll always say I’m amateur and I love to play. Cockiness and ego can ruin your true personality

Lemmy is a true anomaly. The only way we would ever hear his sound again is if he were still alive to make his sound. No amount of money spent on an identical rig, or time spent practicing the style, will ever result in that sound being produced ever again. But that's what makes him one of the greats; most great bass players can be imitated, but to imitate Lemmy is always to fail

Steve Clark (Def Leppard) once said in an interview to aspiring guitarists "Listen to a lot of different players but don't try to be them. Be yourself and develop your own style." I took those words to heart before I picked up my first guitar. There was only ONE Lemmy. Honor him with tribute but don't try to be him. That will only hurt yourself and people won't think you have anything original to say. I like what you're saying here Paul. Wise man, brother. Wise man. Rock on.

I think 9 applies to theory in general... Basically get busy doing stuff, then study. You'll find most things have labels and structures and your studies (standard theory included) allow you ti enhance what you are already doing. Otherwise, you cant make heads or tails of it and end up treating it like gospel.
