How to play the Lion Dance Drum - With Counting (beats)!

There are many different variations and styles for lion dance drumming, and drummers continue to create and innovate new ways to play the beat.
This video shows how we play one variation of the drum at 5 Elements. It is a basic version, and there are many variations that can be done in all the sections. Ex: Each section can be dragged on longer to accommodate the Lion's actions in a routine.
It was recorded in a small room. Apologies for the echo.

Cool thanks for teaching, I am not too good at remembering names and exact formulaes, but the sound of this will probably stick with me, thank you. I really enjoy the way ancient China and Japan have used drums in their music so deeply. It's not something I would have appreciated long ago, but its really grown on me with appreciating certain Asian media.

Thanks for the support! Keep in mind different styles have different drumming beats. This one is more Futsan 3-star style.

Yes, that's true! I'm not sure which style exactly the drumming is in our group but I do recognise a lot of these rhythms

I'm okay with that. I use to live next door by a group of musicians. Plus every drummers always knew their limits how & when to played the drums.. Neighbors just dont take it seriously. The karaoke it self much worse than drumming alone. So i choose to love that.

There are many ways to play Lion Dance Drumming, there are Hok San, Fut San, Fut Hok, Hong Kong, Vietnmese and Many many more, but I believe this one you are playing could be Choy Lee Fut,

+Romulo Velonza The numbers are just counting the beats to help make learning the drum easier. You can really count them anyway you want, whatever helps you learn =).

This is for both Hok-San and Fut-San Lion Dances, right?

+U2Yes 1DNo VGCP Yes, you can use this beat for both Hok-san and Fut-san dances. This drum is more 3-star with a small 7-star element in it. Many teams mix drums together for their Lion Dance. Though, for competition (pole/jongs) the drum style used more often is the 7-star drum.

+U2Yes 1DNo VGCP Yes, but however there are the common drum routines for Hok San and Fut San lion dance too.

And I would recommend you use those common drum routines for the specific types of lion if you do have a troupe

We found with our students that they all learn the drum differently. Some learn by listening, some learn by "singing" the beat, and some learn by counting numbers. Do what's best for you =).
