In Iowa it’s more common to have the highest bidder’s partner not take part in the game. So in this example, Player B (Player D’s partner) would simply lay down their cards during the first trick. The other two players - A and C - have the option of conceding or agreeing to play. (In the example above, nobody would concede, since Player A has a sure trick with the left bower.) However, if they choose to play, the team must take at least one trick. If they don’t take any tricks, they lose the value of the bid. I’m not from there but I’ve read accounts of the game as played in Iowa.
