1. Slow practice 2. Separate hands 3. 4:4 (slow / fast) then switch around, and 6:2 / 2:6 4. Repeat each not twice 5. Dotted Rythms (long / short, short / long) 6. Place finger on the following note 7. Practice in sections 8. "+1" adding one note as you go (through a passage) 9. Practice the other hand as well (even if it's easier) BONUS TIP : transitions by adding notes on each side (one before, one after) 10. Gradually increase the tempo Thanks, Danae 🤗

Thank you so much for these creative tips. I have been playing the piano for a while, but I always struggle with playing fast passages evenly. I am trying to figure out ways for myself to practice smarter rather than playing the same piece or passage multiple times in a row. I will definitely be trying some of these tips the next time I practice!

First play 4 notes slow, 4 fast. Then 4 fast, 4 slow. Next play each note twice. Practice one dotted then fast and then opposite. Practice super slowly, with next finger already on top of next key to be played. Divide passage into sections, and play up to full tempo. Etc

So after about 20 years of not practicing piano, I have come back to the instrument. All these techniques you mention are techniques that my brain is starting to remember. I like that even when you “mess up” you just keep going, which is excellent because not many people keep the “mistakes”. Goes to show that even when you have “mastered it” it can still go wrong. So those who are beginning should not give up just because you mess up once. Everyone needs to remember that practice is just controlled failure. Keep up the good work, and happy practicing everyone.

Your advice on a piece where the right-hand is played fast with a slower left-hand reminds me of a piece on which I am working - Chopin's Prelude Op. 28, No. 16 (B-flat minor). I will certainly try your technique on several right-hand passages that have been causing me some difficulty. Thanks again. Tony R. (Also thanks for your reply to my comment about the left-hand octaves in the 1st movement of Schubert's Wanderer!).

I just noticed that you did all the talking parts of the video in your hotel room, and you did all the piano parts on the concert stage. So in case anyone sneaks into the auditorium to watch you practice, they don't catch you talking to yourself. That was super-clever! LOL

Great tips!! How often do you do these practice? How long does it take to do these? You might finish with only these practices sometimes?
Жыл бұрын
I used to do them daily and now, I still do them for demanding fast passages in order to be able to perfect them at a fast speed quickly. It totally depends on the length of the passage, but I would say, if you can spend at least 30-45 minutes on them every day, that would be great!
@PhillipMinden
@PhillipMinden 4 жыл бұрын
Looks very thorough and reasonable. How does that look in terms of the whole, though? When do you move from one way to the next, or change between them - after some time, or after you're bored, or once you get to a certain level? And you memorise it first, or was that only because you took a familiar passage as a sample?
4 жыл бұрын
I do these exercises also when I am just starting out with a piece - so also long before memorizing it. And I usually move on when I reach the desired level of that day. When I start with a new passage, I do these exercises quite slowly and depending on the day, I also don’t do every single one every day. But this is my general selection of go-to exercises that I use when practicing stuff like this.

Thank you. Everybody has his own habits and abilities, but it really makes a difference to see how somebody does it for whom it very obviously works.

Dear Danae, thank you so much for the valuable info… all wonderful- I would like to have a question; for longer passages that are lets say few pages (etude-like) would you suggest for example take one these exercises a day and repeat many times to master and maybe something else the next day, or mix up? You already play like a master the exercises!
Жыл бұрын
I would suggest to mix them up and not have the exact same routine every single day. Maybe you could repeat an exercise that works really well for you or that is your favourite one every day and then switch it up and alternate between the rest day by day. That way, you also keep your practice interesting and can focus better! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

When I’m practicing slow should I play the notes as hard as I can
2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say they should be played in a „hard“ way but rather in a very intentional way. The dynamics and character should be the same as in the fast tempo (including all the piano and soft sections). Hope this helps!
