Bless you Noah, this is what I've been looking for. As a latecomer to learning the piano but with a life time of listening to music I know what I want to play but couldn't get there. I'm starting to get the hang of the Blues licks and riffs but the combining with the bebop scale was the missing link. Just got to learn the bebop scale now!! :-)

Hi Noah: Another great video. I think you put your finger on it. Distinguishing characteristic of Oscar’s playing is integration. Combining, for example, swing, syncopation, blues, bebop and block chords into the same riff Food for thought. Thank you! David

Thanks for your lesson,and i'm very greatfull. Oscar's tricks,Oscar's harmonys,Oscar's scales and left hand working...but it would be great to get Oscar's brain,and "blood". Beacuse in the scales the tones after each other,and the dinamic of fingers on keys is very important! Very difficult,and only O.P did very well. This video was very usefull for me,thank you once more! Gàbor from Budapest

There’s a few, if you’re after arpeggios though why not just keep it simple and play the chord you’re playing? So play a c7 arpeggio for a c7 harmony.

I have a doubt: Oscar thinks in chord changes on a blues progression? I mean, playing on key of F, when he plays Bb(IV chord) or C (V chord), he plays Bb or C major blues scale or minor blues scale instead C blues scales for all chords?

Oscar had also an incredible speed … and very big hands … he can reach a lower 1 and a 11 octave higher , so he plays walkings very easy like a lower C and higher E. And he said also … he uses his 4th finger for playing the bass legato … (combine 5 & 4). Check out his life solo performance in 1975 … amazing.

Nice try explaining how a swingin’ sound differs from not so swingin’. At least you gave examples which is more than most people do. The subject is usually treated as some sort of inscrutable secret knowledge. Fats Waller famously said “...if you gotta ask, you’ll never know.” But your example falls short, though it isn’t really the focus of your video. Perhaps you could go into the subject in a bit more depth in another episode?

How to play Like Oscar Peterson. Be Oscar Peterson. You have to live his life to be able to play like him. Learn Swing, Show-tunes, bebob. Oscar was influenced and traumatized by Art Tatum, and he also learned classical music. Then he developed his own style. So i quess you cant learn it by watching a video from youtube :)
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Marko, agreed! But as I said in the video, the purpose is not to literally teach you how to play like him, it’s to analyze his style so that we can learn from it. I doubt any great pianist has ever gotten where they are without analyzing the playing of a master and breaking it down into digestible pieces of information to apply to one’s own playing. My only intention in making a video like this is to give viewers a better understanding of some of the building blocks of his playing. Everyone will of course live their own lives and develop their own sounds based on their own experiences and tastes.
