I’ve been digging into Steely Dan lately. OMG everything about their music makes me smile. I can’t believe it took me so long to wake up and realize how good they really were . Every aspect of their music and lyrics just blow me away! So I guess I’ll be hanging out with you for awhile. When I search for Steely you’re at the top of the list. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I don’t think I could get a lot of their stuff without a little help. There’s probably some I won’t even get with your help! But it’ll be well worth the time and effort to try!

Wow. This brilliant, I took a couple of hours on my own learning this, but my chords were not quite correct, your subtleties make all the difference. the first main 2 chords i was doing G maj triad to Am, which sounded 'Almost right' but your Bm subtitution of the G makes the total difference. Similar in all the chord changes. been playing for 50 years, and never would have found the subtleties. Thanks so much. that was terrific tutorial.

Hey Jon, long time guitar player and Steely Dan fan. Taught for many years myself and seen many others try, but you definitely have an excellent teaching style and demeanour. Ironically yours was the second Pretzel Logic tutorial I came across on a quick YT search, and the first one just didn't come close to capturing the actual chords, yes those great harmonic chords, and song structure. On top of that your background looks great, beautiful tele and nice playing style. Nice job, subscribed and will pass on the word. 👍

I used to play with my buddy. We would get up at 5:30 am to smoke weed drink a few beers and play guitar. We had a number of songs we played. But one of them was pretzel logic and i used lay electric over his acoustic. One of the better ones for the farmers markets.

You've got a nice arrangement of the tune, featuring both foundational chords and patterns along with melody and solo notes, kind of a more advanced player's inspiration. I've found a fellow who has a channel who plays this on acoustic guitar and with somewhat different voicings or locations on the neck, using the nut for F chord formations for instance. I offer that simply because in a way this track almost grooves better as an acoustic rural blues anthem. What you have nailed with your equipment is Becker or whoever played the solo and outro licks. The verse and bridge sound more to me like keyboard than guitar.....in fact, I'd characterize the entire song as more appropriate for piano with all those esoteric chords and stretches/slash chord configurations.....better on a piano. Steely Dan music is a lot like wine.....it isn't for everyone, sometimes has to grow on you...in a good way of course...and isn't easy to hone in on the melody quite often ....it seems to fuse rock-jazz-blues and creates a musical porridge if you will that some folks just aren't captivated with.....just like homemade porridge or stews.....a little of this ingredient, a little of that ingredient...and where did you find that turnip growing kind of musical recipe....lol. Rock on.

You are great , thanks so much for sharing , I will try to go slow and go back over it a lot maybe I can get something of the chords I can, t see your fingers and I am trying to deductive reason the chords but GOD I love this tune.. The fact that you got this from a Dan member is very exciting,, Jon Herrington was mentioned but not confirmed by you so I will assume it was a band member and leave it at that , but still that is like would be the thrill of a life time for me anyway.

Steely Dan uses slash chords extensively, so for the F part: F (dgb) to F (eac) making it a major 7. So G/F to Fmaj7

This is a great lesson. Thanks, I'll check out your others. I've been playing the F part at the 1st fret. C to F bass, hammer 2nd/3rd/4th strings from open to Am triad. Nice to have options. Thanks for the bass notes in chorus section - that really adds flavor! (chef's kiss). I learned to play this song in the 80s from an old 70s (pre-tab!) Steely Dan music book that was actually pretty good. Anyone old like me (60) remembers the pre-tab world where we had to listen to songs over & over to work out chords & solos. You "kids" have it so easy now. :) Side note: I'm cheap so I have the ad version of YT. I keep seeing ads for Epoch Times. I'm sure their algos know how much I hate RWM stupidity. Well-played YT.

Instead of thinking F Lydian, could you still think of it as an D minor inversion (based off the 3rd?) . Also, that thing during the prechorus with the readjusted harmony is just genius. I've never heard anything like that in a blues tune.
