Very helpful explanation. I have a set I've not played for years and I'm taking it to a party tonight so that was an excellent refresh. If you were really working out the moves unrehearsed you must be a formidable opponent.

We like to segregate the same-color runs from the multiple color single numbers. We put one type of group on the right side of the table and the other on the left. We put all the blue runs together, all the green runs together and so on. We order the single numbers from high to low. We also keep an order to the colors of the single number groups, e.g., green/red/black/blue. This helps us see everything at a glance.

How would you keep score? The instructions went over a scoring system which didnt make sense.

This so called new game is as old as the mountains and has been played throughout Romania for generations. It is called Remmy and has two variations of play. The first was called etalare is 99% of what is now called Rummikub. The second variation requires the players keep the tiles on their pallets until a winner declares that all his/her pieces are in complete sets. Both variations can have a gambling component either based upon a scorecard or in the second case the manner of winning. For example - 1 If you have completed all your sets first and have used a joker in your sets, then you would receive $1 from each of the other players. 2 If you have completed all your sets first, without a joker in your sets, you would receive $2 from the other players. 3 If you complete your sets first and finished by discarding the joker, you would receive $5 from your opponents. Of course you don't have to play for money.

I have a question about the joker. If it is in a of 7 tiles and it is the 4th tile. Can I split that run and steal the joker however I want. So it would leave like a 3, 4, 5. Joker. 7, 8, 9. This came up the other night and I just didn’t know the answer. Thx

Let assume that there is black run 6-12 on the table. I have two 9 ( blue and red) in my hand. May take black 9 (divide it into two 3 tile runs 6,7,8 and 10, 11,12) and use it to create a group of three 9s?

You can play the joker in your first turn, but the joker has a value of zero. So, your other tiles must add to 30 or more.

Also, isn't it forbidden to rearrange a set or run containing joker, unless you can replace the joker first by building a new set or run with the joker and two of your own tiles? You can then rearrange the former set or run that had the joker, since it has been "consumed". I play Mahjong, HK Old Style (Fān-Laak scoring), but not as well as I used to play.

This is my question!!!!!! This is how my sister and I play. You can not use a tile from a set that has a joker without replacing the joker. But recently played with my sister in law and she doesn’t play that way. So now, I’m confused.

According to the instructions that came with my game: There is a time limit of 1 minute per player, per turn. A player who goes over the time limit must draw a tile from the pool, ending their turn. Players who cannot complete a move within the 1 minute time limit must replace the tiles that were on the table to their previous positions, take back the tiles they played, and draw three tiles from the pool as a penalty, This ends the turn.

Taking a joker from a set, must be replaced, by a tile from the players rack.. Then joker must be used in a new set. The new set must include two or more tiles from the players rack. There is no rule that says you can not take a tile from another set, and use it in the new set you just created.

I swear to god I was never able to beat my great grandmother or my grandfather in this game. Looks like I took after them as I once won 5 times in a row and my family don't know how I do it. I don't either, it just happens. We play a different version btw.
