Hi Allysia, thanks again for all of your fabulous tutorials and info sessions, they're fantastic! Just wondering if you have done a video on modes yet at all? I would love some more knowledge surrounding the theory to using different modes in different key signatures, ta xo

I’m working on ‘Feelin Good’ by C. Norton. I understand how ‘swing rhythm’ feels when playing two eighth notes but it all breaks down when the first beat is an eighth rest. This video addresses that very issue and has been helpful.

Swing and Shuffle aren't the same and you were mainly playing was shuffles not Swing. Listen to Count Basie or Duke Ellington to hear Swing. For shuffles listen to Blues and Blues rock. Swing also changes depending on tempo, listen the Bebop players and the faster the tempo the more they straightened out the eights. There is even more to Swing to create that forward motion that involves how the eighth notes are accented. Swing evolved from the Afro Cuban clave that came into New Orlean music and migrated to Kansas City and the Swing bands, that clave is still underneigh in the Swing feel. Swing can't be written down you have to learn it from doing lots and LOTS of listening, you have to get it in your gut. Even in classical the minutiae of the great performers and how they interpret and play rhythms and phrases can't be written down you have to listen and learn. Written music is just a blueprint and the musician makes it come alive in how they put themselves into interpreting what plan says.
