In this video we analyze a turnaround that Art Tatum played on "Sweet Lorraine" from The 20th Century Piano Genius Record. After analysis we then apply some modified versions to "I've Got The world on a String"

Thats a good tutorial. Learning it in all 12 keys to get to the a section. Hoping that my wife never ever need a c section.

Killer demonstrations. Tadd Dameron uses that turnaround at the end of the bridge of “Our Delight “

No problem! It's such a versatile turnaround for these tempos and if you play a lot of solo piano you need a lot in your arsenal.

This is wonderful James you play sweet Loraine so well. I’m trying to figure out the left hand but can’t quite get there 😂on the off chance, if you fancied it a video about Art’s techniques would be most helpful haha
@Jamesursel1

Thank you, yes going to try to make more educational vids on stride/swing playing. Tatums left hand stride technique is extremely subtle, especially his use of the sustain pedal. I don’t want to put a video out until I feel it’s authentic and has some worth, which could take a long time.lol

One of the love for sale versions on the 20th century album is just stupid I think it’s the alternate take. Tatum is the devil. So great to see advanced jazz piano content that isn’t over saturated with pentatonic berklee fumes. You are underrated and I admire the amount of effort you put into writing out these passages.

I was actually referring to the main take of love for sale, ridiculous
@Jamesursel1
@Jamesursel1 Жыл бұрын
yeah The main Take of love for sale is amazing, people don't realize that the thing about tatum that's most impressive is not the technique or the harmonies but his sense of swing, its very elusive, i have transcribed and played many of his takes on songs and its so hard to emulate. I'm so glad you liked this video man, good to know some people still like good jazz piano, not that side slipping, quartal modal bullshit.

@@Jamesursel1 Amen. Tatum also has an unprecedented amount of sauce and crunch in his strong melodic idioms. People don't try to learn and listen to this music anymore because its intimidating and scary. I am personally Oscar's biggest fan and have studied everything from the exact angle of his pinky on enclosures to which inner voice he'll sometimes sing when playing block chords. These men are underrated and under appreciated gods. Along with Ray Brown, Buddy Rich, NHOP, and a few more. Also Oscar and Tatum swing so hard it ridiculous. I think Oscar might be the hardest swinging musician ever. Tatums sense of time is also extremely advanced and unique to only him as he is able to add a bar or a half a bar anywhere and make it sound incredible. I would be compelled to send you my Tatum favorites but chances are you've heard them all so heres a playlist of my most painful Oscar recordings on spotify. open.spotify.com/playlist/3eDGZnqPSHmbFNSr4Or4YT?si=6e167991d70f4763 Also you probably know this recording but just in case- open.spotify.com/track/3CKL47eTkkCRIaafJpwsLH?si=15f092117b4444f4

@AzlanValentine

I also should mention that Tatum is still the god but Oscar is also god. Tatums version of Sweet Lorraine on the 20th century album along with his version of stardust demonstrate that he is the most beautiful pianist in history, nothing but raw emotion and talent in its purest form.

Such a nice video on Jazz Turnaround Variations, which would be the proper title for it. There is no ultimate Art Tatum Jazz Turnaround. He plays all kinds of turnarounds. But regardless, this video is very well done and highly informative in many other ways. THANKS!
