Great vibrato method demonstration, for single reed woodwind instruments: "Yah," I certainly agree with you. As a professional trombonist however, I prefer using the Slide vibrato (an actual 3rd type), believing it to be much smoother and more expressive, on that particular instrument. In fact, It may help for other instrumentalists to listen to recordings of various Great Trombonists for that reason, too.

Nice! I started playing on my tenor saxophone (first instrument ever) not so long ago but I kinda have a good feeling for it! It is a Conn Ladyface (USA) saxophone from 1939, got it from my dad when he died! I REALLY REALLY LOVE IT and by just listening to this video I already fully understand the vibrato and can play it!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I will definitely watch your other vids too! :) Greets SaxoFrenz

Great tips. I love Grover Washington and I notice that he never used vibrato but I think it's something you need to know and use in some songs like romantic ballads. Thanks

Well you got me there. I developed my vibrato (and my double tonging too) only after I switched to the oboe in high school. After several years studying and playing the oboe in several bands, I recently came back to my first love, and bought myself a tenor and a baritone (but kept playing oboe in bands). I've never noticed that I did my vibrato wrong on the sax, I just did what I learned for the oboe : diaphragm vibrato. It always sounded right to me. Never had a single bad comment on it. On the contrary, people always seemed to like my sensibility, which I believe is due to my oboist studies. Up to now it served me well, and I don't plan on changing my way of playing, though people on the internet seems to think that I am doing it wrong.

Thanks for sharing. Flute players also play vibrato using their breathing instead of jaw motion - they have to. It;s not wrong to do what you're doing. You can experiment with what I talk about in the video, and if you master jaw vibrato, then you have 2 tools in your toolbelt for playing vibrato!

Good advice. I started as a clarinet player. My idol is Mr. Acker Bilk. His technique is really smooth, hence making his work really pleasing to the ears. Now I am into saxophone, but I still listen to his work regularly. I wonder if a clarinet player uses the same vibrato technique as the saxophone players do?

Hey Donna, excellent video! Your explanation of Vibrato is fantastic! I'm playing a Yanagisawa SS992 soprano/Yani #6 metal mouthpiece. The hardest thing I personally find, is co-ordinating the speed of lower jaw/lip, when creating the Vibrato. What's a good technique, to get that faster 'jazzy' style of Vibrato.. Any suggestions? Bryn, Melbourne, Australia.
@DonnaSchwartz
@DonnaSchwartz 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bryn. If you take the exercise I did in the video, using the metronome and subdividing the beats into 2's or 3's, you will develop the coordination you are looking for. You have to give it time - it doesn't happen instantly. Do a lot of listening to your favorite jazz players and how they play vibrato and it will start to come out in your playing too.

Dey Donna i just bought a selmer and the mouthpeice it came with the width is to small.so should i return it or get a new mouthpeice?
@DonnaSchwartz
@DonnaSchwartz 7 жыл бұрын
If I'm understanding you, the mouthpiece that came with your new horn doesn't fit the neck properly? If so, then yes, return it even if you don't intend to make it your #1 mouthpiece. You paid for a new horn that was supposed to come with a mouthpiece that fits properly...

Hi Donna. I'm student, learning how to play sax alto. lear bend the note go first than vibrato?
@DonnaSchwartz
@DonnaSchwartz 7 жыл бұрын
As a beginner, you should be focused on making a beautiful tone first. Don't worry about bending notes or vibrato until all your pitches are clear and in tune throughout the written range of the horn.

Isn't diaphragmatic vibrato actually tremolo? I can't see how one could modify the pitch of a note using the diaphragm.

Does the note we play go flat when we vibrato and then return to its natural pitch like a wave? (I hope this makes sense)
@DonnaSchwartz
@DonnaSchwartz 5 жыл бұрын
Your question makes sense....the pitch will fluctuate slightly when you are doing vibrato. It's important to not bite to get vibrato. When you bite, your pitch will be more unstable.
