Most headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate, commonly known as Lexan. This type of plastic is susceptible to damage by UV radiation from the sun. The lenses can become yellowed or cloudy. They are also softer than glass, so they can also become scratched or gouged.
It takes a little time and effort, but these headlight lenses can be restored to nearly factory-new quality by sanding and polishing them. In this video, the plastic repair experts at Polyvance will show you how to restore a deeply scratched headlight to like-new condition.

Heck ya. People need this video. I've been doing this myself for years. Did my Father's CRV a few years back and my Civic a few years before that. It works fantastic. I didn't know about the clear coats out there back then. For me I just put a nice coat of carnauba wax on there after I polished them. Once they are polished though it's easy to keep them nice. Every 6 months or so you can run over them with a cleaner wax or just do a hand polish and call it a day. I'd do this in a heartbeat with OEM lenses as opposed to replacing them with aftermarket.

This is obviously the correct and permanent way to do it but jeez, I would rather just buy one of those 3m polishing kits and do it in under an hour.

Nice video, is there anyway you could list the grit numbers in order here?

Sure! Dry sanding: 80 (because our lens had deep scratches) 150 (120, 150, 180 are all acceptable here) 320 (220 or 240 could have also been used here) Wet sanding: 320 400 600 800 1000 1500 2000 The most important thing is not to step to too fine of a sandpaper between steps. You want to remove all of the sand scratches from the previous grit before you move on to the next finer grade.

I'm glad I seen this I thought I messed up my headlights because I scratched them up with the 80 grit sandpaper because it was all I had so all I need is to get some 120 to get that out ? Do I need to use water while I'm using the 120 or 80 grit

I do basically the same process but at after 1000 grit I clean the lamp with a plastic cleaner then apply an adhesion promoter and clear it with 2 part automotive clear for durability. Too bad most people are so cheap and will not pay for it unless you want to do it for less than your material cost.

I do the same. No adhesion promoter, just 2 coats of clear and they last for ever.

Do I use the 80 and 120 without water ?
@polyvance
@polyvance 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. We did 80, 150, and 320 without water. Then we did 320 again with water and continued from there.
