This is a basic tutorial on how to polish a concrete counter top. This done with a standard orbital sander and a hose. The concrete polishing pads are the cheap set that you can find on eBay or amazon for about $13 shipped. Be sure to stay updated by subscribing to my channel. I am working on a series from mold to counter top.

Thanks for sharing! Do you know if there are any special tools we can use to achieve a similar effect (revealing aggregates) on spherical concrete surfaces? Like if you would have to sand a bowling ball. Thanks again!
@montanamade1114
@montanamade1114 6 жыл бұрын
I would say it depends on the outcome you want to achieve. If you were sanding a bowling ball I would say you need a lathe...but it you are sanding a sphere that is for decoration I have free handed those with the pads above and they look great. Just take extra time as you work the project, step back and look at it, then sand some more. Very light pressure the whole time.

Did you have to wait for the concrete to cure before polishing?
@nickorlando1012
@nickorlando1012 4 жыл бұрын
David Hanks you don’t have to wait for concrete to cure to polish it you can grind it and use abrasive bonds like he has in video within a day the actual reason concrete needs curing is in case you densify it and or put a sealer on if you going for an exposed aggregate you can start polishing within a day or 2 depending on drying conditions

I recommend it. It will make a mess if you are casting in place so have a buddy to run a wet shop vac and the hose while you run the sander. @montanamade1114

I turned the speed all the way up on the sander and throttled it with the trigger. That sander is very easy to adjust speed through the trigger. Just start on a spot and it will make sense. If you pour a slab maybe mix a little extra and make a practice slab. I have three other videos that show a little detail.

I made a 1.5"x 27" x 67" solid countertop in a form upside-down using concrete from Z-counterforms, which says it does not need any rebar or fiberglass. The instructions say 48 to 72 hours cure covered in plastic. I let mine cure for 6 days. Then 2 days outside the mold on a flat table, good side up. Then I began wet sanding with 50 grit and 100 grit pads just like shown in the video. The next day the ends of the countertop curled up about 1/4" each side and the slab is no longer flat. Maybe I used too much water for the sanding process and this somehow caused it to curl, but I'm scouring the Internet to find the answer as to why this happened.

It would help a lot to show what the counter top looks like at each stage. This lets people know if they are on track to having the same results when they make the attempt. It would also be nice to see the finished product once it is completely dry and then again with the clear coat. It's unsatisfying to watch the video all the way through only to not be shown the finished, dry counter top.
