From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron shows how he used a dual action grinder to polish his sculpture Beacon ....
Kevin Caron has been playing with some stainless steel while making his light sculpture sculpture Beacon.
People have been asking how he polished it.
Kevin Caron shows one of his dual action grinder polishers and the small black shaft that rotates to allow the grinder, which also spins, to rotate orbitally.
The grinder creates a cool effect and also quickly smooths and polishes metal.
Kevin Caron sticks a piece of 80 grit sandpaper right onto the sanding pad - it's adhesive instead of hook and loop. He has a piece of 1/8" stainless steel on his workbench.
To show the difference between single and dual action, he blocks the orbital motion, and puts on his safety gear to show what it can do. He grinds the stainless steel with the grinder set on single action.
Kevin Caron then turns back on the dual action and grinds one section of the metal that he has already prepped with the grinder set on single action. The stainless steel looks very different in the two sections.
Next he grinds the same area with 120 grit, then 220 grit. The metal is looking shinier and shinier.
You can keep going up in grits, finer and finer to get more and more of the scratches out. As you do, the shine starts coming up.
By starting with the single action, you get the roughest scratches more quickly, then you can turn to the dual action with the finer and finer grits and then polishes and you can practically have a mirror.
So this is just one more tool for your metalworking toolbox. A dual action sander like this - either air powered like the one he is using or an electric powered grinder - is great to polish metal.
Kevin Caron thanks everyone for watching, and reminds viewers to click the "like" button before heading to www.kevincaron.com to see more how to videos and his amazing sculptures.
Well, you might hang out for another moment to see him reach ... and reach for the grinder ....

Great video Kevin, I'm trying to restore and polish a stainless resturant prep table, I started sanding with a random orbital sander, but there seems to be a coating and even the 80 grit does not seem to take it off. Any suggestions? Thanks
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 3 ай бұрын
I always love a good mystery! Maybe you have a clear-coat on the stainless.. I would try a propane torch or whatever you have on hand and just try heating a little corner to see if it bubbles up. Or maybe a heat-gun instead. That's about all I got. Please let me know what you do to get this off. I have never heard of a coating like this. Thank you for watching and posting.,

Hi Kevin, greetings from Perth. That was really interesting. I am curious as to what sort of paper you are using. Is it a "metal only" paper or a "general " paper of some sort? Would using a paper made for timber be a waste of time? Thanks so much for your advice.
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 5 жыл бұрын
Need to get to your part of Aus. some day! Had a wonderful 2 weeks in Sydney and Melbourne a couple of years ago. The paper I am using is general use paper from Home Depot. It seems to work well on most of everything I work with. The stainless does eat it up the quickest of all.

Many engineers name that 'dual action' 'planetary gearing,' because it is like a planet around a sun, going around the sun and itself. As an artist, one could sand one piece of a sculpture to a certain grit, like 80 or 220, then other pieces to high grits, say 1600, then finer into the 1000s, creating a sense of color/texture in the final sculpture. Yet a question. If you made one of your sculptures with stainless steel polished to a mirror finish, then left it outdoors, how long would the mirror finish last when exposed to weather, in a climate such as St. Louis, MO, or Kansas City? Thanks for the tips.
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 2 жыл бұрын
With the proper care, cleaning and coating with a stainless polish the shine should last for 20 years minimum. If you polish it to a mirror and then use an auto clear coat it should outlast all of us!

@@KevincaronSculpture I was gonna use 1000 rpm and put sandpaper attachments and work until I get a polish job, lithe maybe start with 200 mininim, 320 grit , 600, 1500 and last 3000 grit? Because it's deep access? Gentle weight not pushing hard, lol. The water distiller is over 300 mm deep and about 250 mm wide. I gotta admit I laughed when I read: don't know about die grinder but go for it? Lol. I pictured grinding through the heating element underneath! Lol😂👍👍👍

@@KevincaronSculpture Series 200/300 Electropolish solution is 75% sulfuric acid, 25% phosphoric acid, and if that wasn't bad enough, it produces toxic metal salts as hazardous waste, specifically chromium salts. Electropolishing increases stainless's corrosion inhibition well beyond passivation, and smooths the surface layer so finely, it reduces where bacteria can hide, and is required for most food-related stainless equipment. My company does it in Kansas City.
