How To Polish Your Dress Shoes | Leather Shoe Shine Tutorial
Gents, taking good care of your leather dress shoes is important in the context of creating an image and a brand that speaks to how you take care of yourself! By maintaining a good shoe polishing routine you can be assured that your shoes will always look clean and shiny and improve the overall look of your appearance, sending the RIGHT message to those around you. It will also help your shoes last longer by adding a layer of protectant to the leather.
The tools you will need include:
- microfiber cloths
- leather shoe cleaner/conditioner
- shoe polish
- scuff cover
- polishing brush
- express shoe shine sponge
In this video I have used Kiwi brand shoe polishing products which I find helps achieve a very nice and lasting polish. Make sure you use a separate set of polishing/cleaning tools for different colour shoes (i.e. black, light brown, dark brown)
Now follow these steps to achieve an immaculate shoe shine:
1. Remove surface dirt - blow off any surface dirt then wipe the shoe with a microfiber cloth
2. Clean and condition - using the clean side of your microfiber cloth to apply cleaner and remove the dirt and grime
3. Apply shoe polish - turn your microfiber cloth inside out (clean side) and now apply a generous layer of polish to the leather and side of the soles - let sit for 5-10 minutes to absorb.
4. Shine the shoe - next polish the shoe aggressively with the polishing brush then use a new microfiber cloth to achieve more shine
5. Apply top layer shine (optional) - use the express shoe shine sponge to apply on top of the polished shoe for an immaculate shine and added layer of leather protection

Needed Isopropyl Alcohol Kiwi parade gloss prestige Ice cube Cotton applicator and buffing rag Cold Water Plastic water bottle Method 1- Mix rubbing alcohol and water, only add around 2cm of alcohol and rest water in an empty water bottle 2- Utilise polishing tin lid and place ice cube on the lid. With the alcohol concoction, poke a small hole with a knife on the water bottle cap to allow the liquid to pour out. Pour a little liquid onto the ice cube. 3-Open polish and start to apply layers over the toe cap with fingers. Add 7 layers. Wait ten minutes for the polish to dry. 4- Take cotton rag and tightly wrap around your right index and middle finger. Wrap excess cloth around arm. Take alcohol water and drop a tiny bit of solution on the cloth. Dab excess alcohol water off. 5- Buff with the cotton cloth around the toe cap. Apply very little pressure, it should be like you are polishing an eggshell. Start touching the Ice cube for just a couple of seconds for the cold water and continue buffing lightly. Only touch the polish to get a little on your cloth when buffing. No need to scrape the polish, just touch. 6- Keep repeating step 5 until fully mirror shined. Once in a while add a little alcohol water to the cloth.

I bought a pair of brown shoes at Sears and only wore them like 4 times before I decided to never wear them again cause they hurt so bad! Three years later, I gave them another chance, and now they’re broken in, and it’s my new favorite shoe. I need to start taking better care of the pair. Thanks for the tips!

My son has pro Thursday (going as a date with a girl older than him so technically not his) and I literally saw his dress shoes that haven't been worn in ages and died! Thank you for saving me the cost of a new pair of shoes for him (which would have been around £80 easily on top of the suit and the corsage etc). As long as you apply the express shines on top of the kiwi polish that should be fine. As the products in the express shine are known to dry the leather of the shoes.

I have a Oxford dress shoes not made of leather but kinda of a suede material. They're tan. I'm going to work out the creases but notice it's starting to lose it's color. I still wanna make then look nice and new besides just retouching the color.

Not as long as you buff them with a rag or brush after it dries that takes the excess off that didn’t absorb into the leather

That tip seems to be idiot, but it's not, since there are people who use colourless polish for every shoe colour, which won't give good result; and there are people who use black polish on brown shoes to darken it.

after you cleaned and conditioned the 2nd shoe did you wait a few minutes before applying the scuff cover? also, did the scuff cover make the shoe cap a darker brown or is the shoe naturally darker at the cap? i re-sell on eBay and have my first pair of mens dress shoes-salvatorre ferraegamo brown cap toe oxford's

Yes I waited about 10 minutes to allow the shoe to dry before applying scuff cover. The shoe has a natural dark toe but the scuff cover darkens it slightly.

If the tongue of the shoe and the eyelets (the holes for the shoelaces) are dirty, you should remove the shoelaces. You don’t want to get the laces dirty. A pencil eraser can also remove some cuff marks before you start shining and polishing. Nicely done.

I have used nail polish and an old toothbrush to scrub old product off the shoe. I also do this to strip old build up of shoes.

I’ve had two pairs of these shoes. They look great but if you wear daily they’ll fall apart quickly, poor quality. Only reason I wouldn’t buy again

Nate Rain depends how often you wear them. For shoes in regular use I suggest polishing every couple of weeks

Arth Armani it will darken the colour a bit so if you don’t want that then use neutral.

those quick shine sponges ruin the finish. bright shine only for five mins and then eats away all your hard work. don't use them on shoes you care about.
