as someone who works on elevators, I promise that the odds of something like this happening to you are astronomically small. a free fall downwards to the ground would only happen if every single cable was cut (each cable is strong enough to support the weight of the car on its own, and there's very rarely only one) and there are so many safety mechanisms preventing this from happening. fun fact: if the brakes fail on an elevator, the car will actually fall upwards, because the counterweight on the other side of the cables is heavier than the car fully loaded. just to emphasize the low likelihood of plummeting to the ground. I'm not an expert (yet but I'm working on it lol) but I'm behind the scenes enough to hopefully be able to calm your nerves a bit. :)

I think then then a cable brake still kicked in and it was not a complete free fall. Also there must have been really poor maintenance on that elevator. Elevators have four layers of backup or so (auto latching brakes for power loss, Overspeed governors in the winch room, emergency brakes in the shaft/hoistway, and also mechanical backups on the car itself. I've been a elevator mechanic for over 10 years and elevators do not free fall down, there are normally 4 to 6 hoist cables that hold up the elevator while running (one cable alone can hold it up, magine 6 cables). Also there is a safety device called a governor that's design to activate the under car brakes located under the elevator if the elevator surpasses contract speed. The best way to stay safe while riding the elevator is your either your in or out (no standing in-between the doors while there open, very dangerous). Stay safe guys 🙏😎

Well, lucky for you elevators have many many safety systems. We're talking failsafe brakes (brakes that engagenif they lose power or air pressure), Overspeed governors in the machine room (devices that brake the cable if cable speed is too high, obviously not present on hydraulic elevators), brakes on the car itself, and lastly, pit buffers. Those can absorb the entire energy of the elevator falling from the highest position at maximum capacity.

So I was really afraid of elevators for the longest time. would FREAK when I got in one. I ended up doing a lot and research and according to what I saw then, I learned that there's basically 0% of an elevator falling. very old elevators yes - from what I saw there was a single documented case of an elevator ever falling and killing someone. anyways, elevators are rigged with magnetic brakes, meaning if it were to ever somehow "fall" the magnets would slow it's descent and nothing would really happen. furthermore, if the power went out, they're rigged with emergency lighting from a backup generator, typically an emergency system of some sort to call someone and let them know of anything going on, and lastly, no chance of suffocating as all the airflow/vents aren't reliant on electricity to function. (edit: another "safety feature" but also general design feature would be that there's not just one single cable guiding an elevator - typically its like, 5 or so I think? so the chances of all 5 of them breaking at the same time... yeah.) this was maybe last year or so, maybe my information is wrong, so please do your one research. but what I do know is that I'm no longer afraid of elevators after the research I did (well, still irrationally afraid - that would be my tendency to easily develop phobias and just general anxiety) EDIT: OMG PLS STOP RESPONDING TO THIS. elevators CAN BE DANGEROUS, they CAN kill people, the chance of it happening is NOT entirely impossible, BUT they are EXTREMELY UNLIKELY TO! the circumstances that they would injure or kill (more likely an injury) would be if the elevator was not up to standard bc of missed/poor inspections, if it was extremely old (inspections should be able to know when something is dangerously out of date but what do I know, maybe lots of buildings get warnings but don't bother replacing them) etc. elevators ARE NOT INHERENTLY DANGEROUS. it is only when they are in a dangerous state! even then, an elevator free falling likely would not be the way you'd ever be injured by one (note that this does NOT include an elevator shifting, dropping bc of a counterweight issue, or any other unexpected movement etc. I'm talking full cable snap no breaks off the rails plummeting to your death moment.) BE SAFE AROUND AN ELEVATOR AND YOU WILL BE FINE. don't try to climb out if you're stuck, walk immediately in and out in one stride and don't enter slowly etc., take the stairs if the elevator is malfunctioning or if it simply makes you feel unsafe to look at. the worst you're likely to experience is getting stuck inside of one for at least half an hour, but this does NOT mean that it has not happened before. please stop responding to this comment. ffs.

@@user-td8yj1rj7c just looked up elevator malfunctions on KZfaq. from what I've seen all of it is small things like the doors opening or closing strangely (opening or closing over and over, the doors "lagging", etc.), the elevator moving weirdly (going up or down when it's not meant to), not responding to buttons immediately, etc. worst i saw was an elevator that "bounced" a little, something about the counterweight mechanics. it was just a little jolt, nothing bad, scared the guy a little but absolutely no harm done. they hold a consistent speed the entire time - any issue with that was it acting slower or unresponsive, if anything. and there are probably mechanics in place to keep it maintaining a safe speed and never exceeding that this is what the call button exists for (if you're inside of the elevator and its malfunctioning. if you're outside of it and you decide you feel unsafe, take the stairs. if that will take a while, would you prefer potentially being stuck in an elevator for up to several hours waiting for maintenance?) I don't really know what you're referring to when you say something worse than the elevator dropping; what could happen to an elevator that's worse than that? like, that's worst case scenario as far as I'm aware. you're way more likely to take damage from whatever's in the elevator or building than the elevator itself. which I do not count as being a fault of the elevator

Luckily elevators have a literal ton of safety systems. Cable brakes that limit the maximum cable speed, brakes that engage if power is lost, brakes on the car itself, and lastly, pit buffers. Those can absorb the energy of an elevator at maximum capacity dropped from the highest floor with every other mechanism disengaged. In the US this test is required for every elevator every five years or so. Also, rule of thumb for elevator weirdness. If the car is not level with the floor and you cant just step over it, better wait. It's not worth risking anything in that case.

Elevators do sometimes fail but I don’t think there has ever been a reported case of an elevator falling down. Elevators work on a counterweight system and fall upwards when something fails. In order for an elevator to hell down it would have to break cables that are rated for like 10x it’s maximum load capacity.

Hey I’m an elevator engineer there are systems in place which stop elevators from falling in the event a elevator goes too fast it automatically stops by using a mechanical method which cannot fail.

To add on to the jumping part, imagine your going 50m/s. Then you jump which reduces your speed by about 2-5m/s, you would still feel the force of gravity and quickly go to 50m/s.

Considering elevators are for accessibility, if I were to be in a falling one in my wheelchair, would the cushion of the chair ‘break my fall’? 🤔

Hmm I don’t think it would… I mean the cushion against a whole metal elevator won’t exactly help 🤔 if not that then gravity… I’m guessing but I’m no professional.

Okay but haven’t y’all ever wanted to see what it feels like to be in zero gravity? I thought the only way i was gonna be able to experience that is if i became an astronaut, which was never gonna happen. I don’t know, i have a lot to consider now. It might be worth it.

The possibility of this happening in the US is zero to none, you have a governor that mechanically holds the elevator on safeties once it over speeds, on top of that you have the counterweight, they are heavier than the cab (more possibilities For the elevator to go up instead of down. Forgot to say usually you have 4 cables, each one of them cables can hold the elevator with no problem.

What if a plane hits your building?
@JuanGonzalez-kb3gm2 жыл бұрын
@@dukes1993724 It all depends, (an engineer would have to explain 9-11) without a doubt the elevator shaft is the strongest structure in the building, and they are also fire rated for two hours. From 10 years experience I have yet to see or hear about an elevator free fall. Many people claim they fell 2 floors. The safeties actuate pretty fast, of course the feeling in the cab is amplified/ kind of like when someone places you on hold for 5 minutes, it feels like 20.
@bedroxzbass47062 жыл бұрын
Elevator engineer here. No they wont fall. they have multiple levels of brakes and safety features that are regularly inspected. If those brakes fail (they wont/can't) the way elevators work now means that you want fall no matter what you'll just go the same speed unless someone physically cuts the thick steel cables or if you removed one of the counterseights
