I can not begin to say enough good things about Juan and the way he was teaching Alex. Not only does he have the knowledge, he also demonstrated that he is also a natural teacher. The patients he showed while teaching Alex, the way that he encouraged him, and the confidence he gave Alex to you it, was nothing less than inspiring. I wish to God that I had had a guy like Juan to come alongside of me back in the early ‘80’s and teach me like that! Especially finishing concrete! 35+ years in the Landscape and Construction fields, I have only come across a handful of men like Juan. Please tell Juan great job, and the way he worked with Alex did not go unnoticed!

14:01 control joints or "D" joints are not designed to stop cracks, there put to control where the concrete might crack. if you look at concrete most d joints will have a crack in them and that's better than having one on the surface and visible

I get what your saying, but its acutally to aid in the concrete cracking. Since the stresses will crack concrete regardless, its to try and force the concrete to crack at that joint so that it is where you want it, and not an out of control crack. Concrete stairs made this way on a dirt hill like this will most likely deteoriate quickly in the north east with our freeze and thaw cycles, and frost heaves.

Yep...was going to post that but u Handled it. Control means just that, all concrete cracks and the control joint is to control where one wants it to crack...if deep enough. Control joints should be 1/3 of the concrete depth (thickness). 4" thick =1-1/4" deep control joint 6" thick =2" deep control joint

It may just be because they are being recorded although doubtful with the number of years they have done this. They are incredibly patient with the apprentice and are allowing him to learn without being degraded or yelled at for not knowing. This is what keeps companies open, the care and understanding with new people wanting to learn the trade is almost as important as quality of work. Without these new people you cant operate because you cant keep employees.

Stan, One point you should add to everyone in this vlog, is that by wheelbarrel'n the concrete you waste set time for the concrete (which you will need finishing ie. the steps) Whenever possible try to truck dump the load and saver precious/valuable time. I know I will get slack for this from other people, but I would have just backed the truck up that hill and chute dumped 80% of this job!

"You get what you pay for" I can mix concrete, but I have to admit all my concrete is at the bottom of a post, under a foot of dirt, sometimes I even add water... Have extra guys cost more, the concrete is about the same but darn does it look better. Stan: When you show different business, they seem to have an owner that is working and teaching the new guy. The work is fun to watch, both in its artistry and a fun place to work. I guess my takeaway should be to create an environment where you folks want to come to work, want to work hard, learn what there is to learn and then teach it to the next guy. When every an option, I would love to see more of these type of business.

we use that same sprayer to spray diesel on our forms to release them also when we are finished we use a sealer with the same kind of sprayer its just a different one so we dont cross contaminate. we mostly frame houses install doors windows and some times shingles but when things slow down we will dig footings and pour them and slabs. Im glad i got the opportunity to be where i am i learned a lot working for this company and we will not cut corners i like how professional this company is its the best way to learn the right way. The funy thing is my boss showed my brother and my brother showed me and you know some of the same knowledge passed down came from ancient times the string line is old but still cant be beat one simple inexpensive tool can do a lot using one dry or with chalk

Also a great concrete mix. Most mixes now have less cement blend and it dries up too fast .
