I'm so glad that I came across this video I'm newer to guitar and I don't know where to strum up on a metronome on Beats of four. Like for the song purple rain I've found videos of strumming pattern but I don't know how to use the metronome when to up strum

Great lesson. Thanks. I downloaded an app and wow this helps a lot keeping time. ANd the selective cord striking thrown in helps make it interesting. Strumming practice is what I am doing while finger tips develop. Which is what I suggest to all beginners. If your fingers hurt too much don't skip the day. Simply practice strumming and perfect the way you strike the strings, along with keeping time. No wasted days. No down time. Even with out using the fret board you can make strumming interesting and fulfilling. Every now and then try a cord out. By the time your finger tips fully develop and no longer hurt, the strumming should be getting natural, so now the focus can be on proper cords and changeovers. I find that as long as my fingers hurt the cords are just for testing momentarily. By the time I get fingers positioned right so all strings ring clear my fingers hurt too much to strum more then 1-2 times to see how it sounds. That G cord is hell

I learned chords, barre chords and progressions but always had problems with timing on the guitar.Maybe its because i am really impatient and dont want to listen to the story about the tree that a guitar wood came from like most online guitar tutors and just want to know how to do whatever it is on the guitar.Thankfully there people like you on youtube Sean (Thats Irish for James incase people dont know). Thanks for getting my playing up to Clevel as my strumming was at the bottom of the ocean.

Have you ever tried using konnakol for counting? I find it very useful as the syllables are almost identical in duration. Using ta-ka-ta-mi for 16th notes and ta-ke-mi for 8th note triplets helped me out with rhythm, also changing between one and the other.

That "stabbing a piece of time" if done correctly goes pretty good when a Marine Band A warp kicks in :)

You've got the same Korg metronome I do. Since I got a looper pedal, though, I never practice with the metronome. Instead, I use the metronome to record a rhythm track into the looper, then practice to that. Way more fun. How come you hardly ever play my GPCPA4, you always have that Taylor? I always enjoy your videos, and often get something out of them, too. Thanks, Sean.

Thank you for your video! I don't understand why you dont have 1 million views already. I find the 4 notes subdivision to be too difficult at 94 beats and have to slow it down to 70 75 not sure if people have the same problem? Also I used to strum with my fingers rather than a pick. But at a higher speed I find its hard to do with fingers and have to switch to a pick.

Thanks for all of the videos, they're extremely helpful! Can you please make a video on the ideal arm/wrist/finger positions, and more importantly, pick angle and motion when strumming? I've been learning acoustic guitar for 2 months, and I'm struggling with the strumming, mainly upstrokes. I've watched your other strumming and pick videos, and although they have helped, I can't seem to get the upstrokes good. I either miss the strings, hit only the high E, or scrape my fingers on the way up. How much should I angle the pick on the way down and up? Is the wrist motion supposed to be like turning a doorknob (twisting) or more like dragging the pick like you're sweeping the strings? Thanks again!

Hey Sean, been watching a few of your videos for strumming etc. I have found that now I'm trying to do things properly, I'm struggling to get comfortable on the guitar as I have quite long arms. Some people say you should 'cradle' the guitar a certain way but if I do it the way they say, I'm strumming on the neck! I have a full size guitar so it's not like a 3/4 or anything!! Could you (if you haven't already) do a video on posture and guitar position while seated, including arm position and movement for simple strumming. Cheers

Do you ever, or have you ever, had a problem with them hitting the guitar and making unwanted noise? I get it a lot, mostly at higher speeds. Tried to tuck them but it does not feel natural at all. I just started playing guitar a few days ago and try to learn my first strumming patterns. I have got a question, When I am strumming up i thought i should play the same strings from the chord, but it seems it is not the case. so what strings should i play for example if i am playing a D chord, in the down strum i will play #4 - #3 -#2 - #1 strings, so the strumming up would be #1 - #2 - #3 until #4 again, only 1 string or 2 ... what is the rule?, i am bit confused.

I wish someone would teach how to practice striking ONLY the strings needed for strumming a given chord, particularly on the upstroke. Depending on the chord, the downstroke has you omitting certain strings at the beginning or top of the strum, i.e. either string 6, or 5 and 6, or 4, 5, and 6. But all remaining strings are strummed down to the 1st string. Since I haven't found a video on it anywhere, I've developed my own practice method for avoiding the top X'd out strings on the way down, trying to get muscle memory for where the pick has to be inserted between strings to strum only the strings I need for that chord. If this isn't difficult enough, the upstroke is a lot harder. In chords that don't use all 6 strings, you must stroke the first 3, 4, or 5 strings (which means strings 1, 2, and/or 3 depending on the chord), then avoid having the pick strike strings 4, 5, and/or 6. This seems very difficult, yet no one talks about it. I've practiced sweep picking style up strums with a metronome, but that's not helping cause the strings aren't being hit at the same time the way a fast strum has to happen. I have yet to find even ONE lesson video that discusses this, yet it's a required ability to keep from including notes in chords that aren't suppose to be heard. The most I've seen is how to wrap the thumb over the 6th string to mute it, thereby allowing the player to keep stroking all 6 strings without worrying about not touching the 6 string, but this seems like a cop out. It doesn't solve the other problems of 3 and 4 string chords, and a muted note is still a faint sounding note that shouldn't be heard at all, especially for recording studio work. Why doesn't anyone talk about this and how to practice it? It seems to be the most difficult aspect of strumming.

Whattaaa??!? I've been playing guitar for 17 years, but I never took lessons, I taught myself. Figured maybe some basic videos on strumming might help me get better, but I am so lost right now. This video made me feel so stupid. As if I literally know NOTHING. 😭 It's like you're speaking another language!! 😭😭😭 ugh I'm sure it was a great video for people who speak this "language".
