Thank you for this, haven't done kneeling for so many years. I did Judo when was 7 until my Master died when was 13, 51 years later with extra time and a bit more able to afford it my wife and I would love to do Kendo and Iaido. But now there is nowhere near to train. These things are sent to try us! So we do as much as we can to get ready for when we can start. The Japanese culture is wonderful, when I get the chance to practice it seriously, I won't hesitate. Now I'm just praticing Seiza but it's already so nice to do that, even though my entire leg goes numb if I stay on the same position for 10 minutes.

Hi, thanks for the tips! It really is difficult to get used to this position. My ankles would feel numb due to the blood veins near the ankles getting pressed on. Does this problem resolve itself over time, or is it just that my ankles are not flexible enough?

Seiza in India called Vajrasana pose it helps to make the body strong. And agura is called sukasana usually relax the body .

Hello I am about to practice kendo, and I heard that the foundation skills are important. So I wonder how many swing should I do per day so I can have a great foundation

Lake Mercer Welcome to the kendo world! Hope you will have a great journey! Now there is no specific number. But my advice to you... it is not about the number at the beginning. It is about how you can make your form solid. If you repeat a bad forms, your kendo will have a bad foundation. So do it correctly. Slowly. Then start adding numbers. Start from 10. Slowly but correctly. Pay attention to all the movements. Then gradually increase the number. When to stop? When you get tired a bit. You should not do too much at the beginning because you just feel terrible next day. It is exactly the same as going to the gym. You go there and work out too much. What happens next day? Too much is not good. When you get tired then stop. As you advance, you should challenge yourself. Even if you get tired, you should not stop there. Again you do this when you become advanced. My problem is that my feet hurts and I can't feel them after some time. Is it normal?

If you are not used to seiza, yes, it is normal! You just have to get used to it! 😁

Yeah at this point I only managed it with shoes on, I could feel the heels on my butt.

Will constantly stretching/practicing seiza help prevent the leg from getting numb and experiencing pin pricks later on? I can kneel for 30minutes max but I want to sit longer if I can. Thank you

To be honest with you, I am not sure if you can sit that long without getting numb and feeling pins and needles. Stretching should help but the question is how much it will help. I am sure that you should sit as long as you can if you want to sit longer. That is probably the best way to practice.

I just got back from Japan, where I was told that at the long tea ceremonies they subtly shift their weight from one knee to the other to prolong the time they can sit in seiza without discomfort. The other tip I was given was to relax totally.

When i trained karate, my shihan required us to sit seiza when he was instructing us.

my knees wont bend enough. ankles are not the problem

Big Boss Thanks for your comment. That's hard to say. It might take years. If it hurts too much, ask your teacher for permission to lift up your body so you don't sit on your feet.
